Note from Data Manager to Families
Attendance
The school calendar contains 178 student days. Regular school attendance increases the amount of academic progress students can make so it is critical that students attend school each day. Students who miss more than 18 days of school during the same school year may not be eligible for promotion to the next grade level unless the Appeals Process is followed (see pg.11 in ACS Code of Student Conduct and Students Rights Handbook). Students who miss school must bring a note explaining the reason for their absence on the first day they return to school. Absences which are NOT followed by a note will automatically be coded as unexcused/unlawful. Please schedule trips, appointments, and other activities in order not to interfere with your child’s school attendance. For your convenience, an Asheville City Schools Calendar is posted on the Claxton Web Page. In order for a student’s absence to be considered for approval as an excused educational absence, the parent must submit in writing, to the principal, two weeks prior to the absence, the specifics of the absence and its educational impact. Educational activities will need to be tied to the NC Standard Course of Study for the appropriate grade level (found at http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/curriculum/). The principal will then notify the parent/guardian whether or not the absence can be excused as an educational absence.

Current Learning Topics
Test on Monday 11/20. Students have study resources in their science notebooks.
Water cycle vocabulary quiz on Friday. Extra Credit homework is highly encouraged :)
Math- We are beginning to explore multiplication and division strategies. We have begun with division, and used it to help us figure out speed of our Fun Run times. Speed = Distance divided by time.
Reading- HOMEWORK HAS CHANGED! Students will now have the option to read for 20 minutes OR complete an iReady reading lesson each night. On page 24 in the student journals, there is a log glued in for the 5 days of the week. If students choose to read, they must record a reading response using the sentence stems found at the front of their journal--1 to 2 sentences (Reading Strategies). If the students choose to do an iReady lesson, they can record the focus question or provide 1 to 2 sentences explaining what they learned. For every 5 lessons passed on iReady, students will receive a small reward and for every lesson the students pass, they get to add a sticker to the their class poster for the "Fill the Box" challenge.
Social Studies- This week we are studying the 13 Original Colonies. We began with a map last week and are now working to complete a chart on the founding of the colonies, their economies, and the relationships they each had with Native Americans.
The Essential Standards for this unit include:
5.H.1.1 Evaluate the relationships between European explorers (French, Spanish and English) and American Indian groups
5.H.1.2 Summarize the political, economic and social aspects of colonial life in the thirteen colonies.
