November Newsletter
from Multnomah Education Service District
The Power of Gratitude
For this month, we decided to center our newsletter on gratitude. Gratitude has the power to reduce stress, increase resilience, and improve our overall well-being. Gratitude is a lens through which we can appreciate everything that surrounds us, even in challenging times. This practice not only cultivates a positive outlook, but also fosters deeper connections with others as we express our appreciation.
For this edition, we asked the MESD Cabinet to share what they are grateful for:
"I am grateful for the School Improvement and Climate and Culture teams, who are supporting MESD’s component districts to meet their Integrated Guidance goals. This adaptive work requires them to be proactive and responsive, to collaborate across many different teams, and use many different types of data to inform their work. I appreciate their dedication and leadership that they provide to our region."
Angela Hubbs, Director Curriculum & Instruction
"My gratitude is to the Human Resources team. During the month of September, Human Resources hired and onboarded 86 new employees. HR Team, your tireless efforts in cultivating a positive workplace culture have not gone unnoticed.”

Climate & Culture Open House
Natasha, Uma, Esther, Martha, and Laura created a relational, fun, purposeful, and educational environment — they modeled the exact kind of spaces they foster in schools across our component districts. Congratulations for an incredible open house event!
Climate & Culture Open House takeaways:
Schools need to have a heart more than an algorithm.
We use data, compassion, wonder, story, high standards, human designed improvement science and structure to sow seeds of growth into the heads and hearts of the next generation of adults.
As a community, let's continue to build places and spaces where kids, families, school staff, and community are loved as well as challenged.
Let’s share with each other literacy, humor, culture, and the joyful, compelling fascination with this world where we believe in the ability and worth of the humans we work with and serve.
Let's bring all of us — school staff, Cabinet, community, youth, and families —together to build a better future for our students.

East Metro Esports Program
For the 2022-2023 School Year, EMSP, along with multiple partners, initiated the East Metro Esports Program. This program included partnering with school districts, industry, community partners, higher education, and others to provide access to esports and computer science experiences to students in East Multnomah County. As part of this work, our partners at MetroEast Community Media produced a mini-documentary of the work.

November is Native American Heritage Month
The Portland metropolitan area rests on traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River. Indigenous people have created communities and summer encampments to harvest and enjoy the plentiful natural resources of our area for the last 11,000 years.
MESD honors the rich traditions, vibrant cultures, and many contributions of all indigenous peoples this Native American Heritage Month. Let's learn, appreciate, and respect the tapestry of our nation's first peoples.
