The Hard Disk

Information about a hard disk.

What is a Hard Disk?

A hard disk is a rigid non-removable magnetic disk with a large storage capacity. A single hard disk usually consists of several platters. Each platter requires two read/write heads, one for each side. All the read/write heads are attached to a single access arm so that they cannot move independently. Each platter has the same number of tracks, and a track location that cuts across all platters is called a cylinder. For example, a typical 84 megabyte hard disk for a PCmight have two platters (four sides) and 1,053 cylinders.

What is it used for?

  1. A hard disk drive is a data storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information using rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. A hard disk retains its data even when powered off.
