Practice on "Spelling City" http://www.spellingcity.com/MrsPrugh/
We will be learning about the important features of non-fiction text. Students are expected to be able to locate and use the table of contents, glossary, index, captions, and pictures in a book and explain the job of each feature. They will also practice making connections to some non-fiction animal books.
In writing, we will identify and write about important facts and details in the book Thanksgiving on Thursday, from the Magic Tree House series. This is a great example of how non-fiction details can be included in a fictionalized story.
I am so happy to see everyone continuing to grow in reading. The November iStation assessment really shows how well they are doing, and I appreciate your continued support in this area. Please continue to have them log into the program at least 30 minutes per week. This is addition to their daily independent reading which should be about 20 minutes each night.
Math
We will be learning how to solve word problems involving joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20 with unknowns as any one of the terms in the problem.
This week will focus on "join start unknown"
For example:
Mrs. Prugh had some cookies. Lylah gave her 13 more. Now she has 25. How many did she start with?
? +13 = 25
Some kids were signed up to play basketball. 7 more signed up today. Now there are 12 kids on the team. How many signed up before today?
? + 7 = 12
We will solve these problems using number lines, part-part-whole mats, counting up/down, and ten frames.
Science/Social Studies
We will learn about why we celebrate Veteran's Day on Monday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday we will finish our soil and earth materials unit.
On Thursday and Friday we will begin our past and present unit focused on the early settlers.
**Look for our class "Moon Book" to be coming home in the next few weeks.
