This Week, From the Art Room
6th Grade:
Students have been settling into routines and understanding expectations, and we are wrapping up on our first project. This week we will be creating torn paper animals, in a mosaic fashion. The students seem to be enjoying this process, and they are all doing a fantastic job getting started. I think they are excited to be moving into a different realm of Art and doing something that is a bit more open ended with choosing their favorite animal. I am always impressed with the results on this project.
7th Grade:
I have been tossing several mini projects at them lately and we are working on a secret collaborative project that we will unveil in the coming weeks. Students will also be starting an abstraction project this week that will challenge them to think realistically and outside the box. I will also be sending out proposal worksheets for their independent art project that we will start after thanksgiving and should take us out to winter break.
8th Grade:
Students are in the final stretch of their book project, and we will be moving on this week to a few new projects. The first being a four-panel project I call Blow It Up. We will be selecting objects and photos and drawing different areas and parts of that object and pushing the perspective and increasing the size of certain areas. This challenges the students with composition, and detail. It also promotes visual literacy, by looking at objects in a different way, and increasing awareness in what we see. I really like this project because it is a challenge for them, and they always do a fantastic job, because it it all in how they perceive things.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate in contacting me.
Artfully yours,
Mr. Chapman

While some students have already met grade level goals, all students should practice to improve their skills. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goal that they should practice at home. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have an Internet connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training. Many computer students email to ask login information or for me to assign specific assignments on typingtraining.com. I welcome these emails and respond as soon as possible.
7th and 8th graders revisited their Microsoft Excel calculators, adding additional formulas. They also completed a coding challenge using Khan Academy.

6th grade band: The students in 6th grade band are working hard and moving along quite well in book 1. The students are still grouped into woodwinds and then brass and percussion. This is proving to help the students receive more individualized instruction. Please encourage your student to practice at home for 10-15 minutes per day. The next concert will take place on Monday, December 19 at 6:30 PM in the middle school gym!
7th grade band: 7th grade band completed chair testing and is moving forward in their work on their sheet music for the concert on Monday, December 19 at 6:30 PM in the middle school gym. We are very excited about the progress that they have made and we are excited to see what happens throughout the rest of the year. Please encourage your students to practice at home.
8th grade band: The students in 8th grade band have been working so hard on the sheet music for the upcoming concert. I am so excited to see what they are going to produce in the next few months as well. These students are so dedicated and I am so proud of everything that they have accomplished! Keep up the great work kids, and parents you should be very proud of the accomplishments that your student have made so far this year!
7th and 8th grade wire choir: Students are working on notes in standard notation and are working on a composition for guitar using standard notation. They are both working very hard and I am very excited about some performance opportunities for us in the community in the near future!
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via email at sglynn@fulton58.org or kneudecker@fulton58.org.

HORNET SINGERS:
Hornet Singers...though they be but few, they be mighty!
They have started the year strong with their first concert and will only grow from this point! We have been digging into our Christmas music...that's right...it's time for Christmas in the music classroom so we can be prepared to serenade you with wonderful tunes of the season in December.
Just a reminder that we will only have school Monday and Tuesday so you can enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!
The choir handbook and schedule is online for your perusal anytime. (www.fulton58.org)
HARMONY HORNETS:
We can not wait until this group gets to showcase what they have been so diligently working on every Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
Even though we don't have school on Wednesday, we will still have rehearsal Tuesday after school as our concert is quickly approaching! We want the students to feel 100% confident and prepared and attendance is vital in making that happen.
This group will make it's debut for the year in December!
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
We are moving on to our repertoire for the December concert now, as well as taking some time to refine singing technique! This is the beginning of the music learning phase, which means lots of hand signs and solfege work. I'm truly impressed the focus each student is demonstrating in class. Keep it up!
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
We are off to a great start! Arts Alive students have finished up the focus unit on rhythm and beat. Overall, students have done outstanding work.
This week, we pretested on terminology and symbols about dynamics (relative loudness of softness in music), tempo (speed in music), and articulation (the style of the sounds being produced.) We are practicing and performing these words to help us remember what each term means. We will begin our movie music unit after Thanksgiving, using it to practice identifying the terms and symbols we are studying. Our goal is to be able to discuss music using appropriate music terminology.

FMS Guidance: Mrs. Garner & Mrs. Horstmeier
Kindness Does Matter here at FMS and in our community.
Research shows that repeated acts of kindness:
- Makes you happier.
- Improves your immune system and health.
- Lowers the rate of depression .
- Makes you feel more creative.
- Causes employees to want to work harder for employers.
- Increases the endogenous opioids in the brain, giving us a natural high.
- Create the feeling of “emotional warmth,” producing the hormone oxytocin which in turn helps reduce blood pressure and protects the heart.
Try being kind, you might just like the way it makes you feel.
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Guidance Office:
Mrs. Garner works with students with last name starting with M-Z and can be reached at sgarner@fulton58.org,
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-L and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and
