August 2022

A message from Mrs. LaBuwi

Happy first week of school, Lions! I am so excited to join the Sunrise community as your new principal. The 22-23 school year is off to a great start. I want to extend a special welcome to our newest Sunrise families and staff. We have lots of new faces to meet on campus, and I look forward to getting to know you all. We are honored that you have chosen Sunrise Elementary for your family and were impressed by the wonderful turnout this week for Meet the Teacher Night.

Student safety is a top priority here at Sunrise. In an effort to keep our students and staff safely learning on campus, please review the following safety precautions currently in place:

1. Limited visitors/volunteers are allowed on campus while students are present.

2. Families are asked to make appointments with the front office to help us limit the number of guests we have in our very tiny front office. You can call 602-467-5900 to schedule an appointment.

3. We encourage the use of Zoom when meeting with staff members to maximize efficiency.

4. Gates open at 8am. Students who walk are asked to enter through the gate closest to their homes. Kinder parents can walk students up to the kinder gate (front of school on southeast side). All other parents are encouraged to drop off in car line. Students must stay in cars until 7:58. Parents will not be able to walk students to their classrooms.

5. Sunrise will do a staggered dismissal again this year. Kinder and 6th grade will be the first to dismiss at 2:50. We encourage kinder parents to arrive at 2:45 when picking up in the car lane.

Please visit the link below for more details on school safety from Scott Warner, DVUSD Director of Operations

Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education.

With appreciation,

Mrs. LaBuwi, Principal of Sunrise Elementary

Standards Based Grading Updates

Sunrise Elementary will continue the journey of implementing Standard Based Grading for the 22-23 school year.

What is Standards-Based Grading?

Standards-based grading (SBG) is a system of education, which focuses on student learning and grades based on demonstrated understanding of specific concepts. Instead of a simple letter, students receive grades in multiple different learning targets and can see which concepts they understood well and which they need to improve on.

Standards-based grading provides explanations of the concepts and material that students should know at each point in their education. These are called learning standards, which provide a baseline that is consistent across all students at this education level. Teachers’ instruction is guided by these standards and they work to make sure their students learn all of the expected standards they need to before leaving their class.

Please see below for a more detailed description of how SBG will be implemented on the Sunrise campus.

From Nurse Penny...

Symptom of Illness:

It’s everyone’s efforts from last year that helped keep our School Healthy!! As a community, we still need to continue to support our school by following the guidelines for illness for everyone’s safety and well-being. If you have questions regarding the process for signs of illness please reach out to the school nurse for questions. If your child is showing one sign of illness, please keep your student home and follow the guidelines for illness.

Reminder- If your child is new to Sunrise- Immunizations are required to enroll at school.
