Butterfly School News for NOVEMBER 2019!!
Sunday, October 20th was a very difficult night for many Dallas residents as multiple tornadoes inflicted over $2B dollars in damage. Many homes were destroyed, family’s lives turned upside down, and several schools severely damaged beyond use. The students and teachers for these schools have been displaced for an undetermined amount of time, many losing everything in their classrooms. Teachers invest much of their personal finances into their classrooms to help their students learn. Unfortunately, most of these monies they will never be compensated for.
How do you pick up the pieces and begin to move forward after such a catastrophic event? The definition of resilient is being able to bounce back after experiencing a trial. That’s exactly what these teachers must do. In Galatians we are told to, carry each other’s burdens. Thanks to the generosity of our Riverside Church family and our Butterfly School family we were able to assist in a small way the teachers and students at Walnut Hill Elementary school. Their school was damaged by the storm beyond use and they have had to relocate to a different building. Butterfly School collected Expo markers, reams of paper and gift cards to distribute to these dedicated teachers.
Walnut Hill Elementary School principal, Phillip Potter reached out and thanked Riverside Butterfly School for providing the thoughtful and much appreciated package. They were touched beyond belief and grateful for the gifts from the Butterfly School students and the families of Riverside Church.
As I am still receiving gift cards, I plan to make a second delivery Monday, November 11! So if you wanted to contribute but didn't get a chance last week, you can participate.

Reaching Out- Helping Others
Each year Butterfly School collects non-perishable food to give to families in need for the holiday season . You should have received a letter from your child's teacher of the items their class is collecting. God has blessed each of us in so many ways! We are learning to be thankful as we share with others who are not as fortunate. Thank you for helping your child understand how important it is to give to others by bringing the suggested canned goods to school!
Chapel Chat -Ms. Chris
In Chapel we are learning that God made us and God helps us. The Bible teaches us to help each other. Like God helped the poor widow feed Elijah: 1Kings 17, we will help the North Texas Food Bank feed many families with Butterfly School’s food drive. Each class will bring in a specified food item to fill up their class’ basket. The children are so excited to help feed others after hearing our story about Elijah!
In the 4’s and 3’s classes we will begin the story of Jesus’ birth and practicing songs for our Christmas program. Don't be surprised if your children are singing our songs at home!!!
Our Bible verse for November is Colossians 3:15, “Always be thankful”. I am so thankful to be teaching your children about God’s word!
Musical Moments! Ms. Deborah
How fast this year is going by!! November in Music Class brings Thanksgiving and the season of fall. The Toddlers and 2s classes will continue with nursery rhymes as well as some fall songs while learning how to play instruments to the beat of the song and how to sing and play softly and loud. The 3s classes will be singing songs about thankfulness, fall, and continuing their journey through the alphabet in music. This month we will discuss I for Instruments, J for Jazz music, and K for Keyboard. The Pre-K classes will continue to explore the instrument families of brass and percussion. We will finish off the month with the playing of “Peter and the Wolf” with instruments for all of the families represented. The 3s and Pre-K classes will also begin practicing for the up coming Christmas Program. May your hearts be full of Joy and Thanksgiving as we enter the holiday season. May God bless you and yours!
Amazing Artists at Butterfly School! -Ms. Jennifer
In Art class we completed two of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous paintings Starry Night and Sunflowers. Along with the artwork we read stories that help the students understand the meanings behind his paintings. This month we will be working on “Pop Art” by famous artist Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
Spanish! Ms. Sandra
Hola amigos, this November we will be starting Los Colores and Los Numero, and making a fun fall activity to remember our numbers and colors, we will also be learning new fun songs to go along with our colors and numbers.
Movement Matters -Ms. Kayli
This month in P.E. and Movement we will be working together in cooperative learning games! We will be strengthening our vestibular systems by doing yoga. Gross motor skills for young learners are crucial, so we will be doing activities that engage our whole body!
Super Sign Language -Ms. Luella
We had a lot of fun signing in October. Each day we learn/review letters, numbers, and colors then play a game. Then we learn/review signs from the unit being studied in the classroom and then play a game. The favorite game of all so far is the ‘Butterfly Swat’ Game. I lay out sign pictures on the floor and call up two children and give them fly swatters shaped like butterflies. I then call out a word and they must swat the correct sign picture with the fly swatter. For November the threes will be leaning signs for C, G, T, brown, three, and signs from the units Transportation and Thanksgiving. The fours will be learning signs for F, Q, brown, nine and ten, and signs from the units Farm and Thanksgiving. We will also learn about William Hoy, a famous deaf baseball player. And we will learn the chapel Bible verse for November with signs. I am enjoying your children so much, thank you for sharing them with us!
Library- Ms. Lee
What a pleasure it is sharing great literature with Butterfly students! In November the three year olds will be listening to transportation stories and the four year olds will be hearing stories focused on farms. I'll read Thanksgiving stories with both groups. I love that the literature I share opens up discussion that connects with what the students are learning in their classrooms. They are sharing their knowledge with me and asking terrific questions. We are enjoying our library time!
Sensational Science- Ms. Tracy
In science this month the kids will be learning about chromatography while making tie-dyed coffee filters, the physics of pancakes (yummy) and the three states of matter with a can of shaving cream! I love watching these kids learn through fun on Fridays!
Coding Kids- Ms. Susan
This month we will be adding BeeBots to our class. We will take our BeeBots and apply what we leaned last month being unplugged. We will explore with the BeeBots this month and understand what the buttons are and how we can make the move
