Senior Parent Meeting
SENIOR PARENT MEETING ON MARCH 21@7 PM IN THE CAFETERIA TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT GRADUATION.
There will be a Senior Parent Information meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at 7 pm in the cafeteria. We will include information about the last quarter for seniors, must do items, tickets for graduation, cap and gown ordering, graduation, and prom. You may also pay obligations. Mrs. Wolfe, Ms. Bridge and Mrs. Wanzer will be there to answer your questions.
Opportunity: SVHS Depths of the Valley Literary Magazine
Welcome to the Depths of the Valley! Are you a creative writer or artist? Consider submitting to the Seneca Valley Literary Magazine. A collection of unique, student made prose, poetry, and art. Your artwork could even be considered for the cover page! The Literary Magazine is an amazing way to showcase your own personal work. You can submit your work through this link by March 30th. Come join us in the beauty of writing. Click here to enjoy all the previous issues of the Depths of the Valley Literary Magazine!
The Literary Magazine will also need a new eagle art cover for the 2023 issue. Send in your cool eagle art pieces to the competition! We will review the art entrees and pick out one for the art cover! We will send you an email telling you who has won the competition when it’s over. We take all visual art!
Are you interested in supporting student creativity? Are you interested in helping our efforts to display the creative minds of Seneca Valley? Then please consider sponsoring the SVHS Literary Magazine, From the Depths of the Valley. Amounts of $20 and above will go a long way in helping us publish and print Volume VII of our Literary Magazine. Any donations can be made at SchoolCashOnline, click here. All subscribers will receive a printed copy of the completed Literary Magazine and a sneak peek at some student work every month! After donating, be sure to supply your email address for the sneak peeks by completing this brief form.
SAT SCHOOL DAY
Here is some information about SAT School Day on March 22. All students grade 11 will take the SATs. Students who are testing have been assigned to locations from 7:45am – 12:15pm. Students will receive an email to their mcpsmd.net accounts, with their testing location this week prior to testing. Students should bring graphing calculators (if you already have one), water, and a light snack to eat during a break. Please note: SVHS will NOT provide calculators for students. Please bring your own. Testing will begin promptly at 7:45 am, so please make sure students arrive to school on time.
For students who arrive at the regular time and are not testing, they will go to the auditorium, gymnasium or cafeteria until the end of testing. The Graduation Readiness and Physical Education departments will facilitate activities during this time for students who arrive at the regularly scheduled time and are not testing.
After testing, students will go directly to lunch then report to homerooms and participate in Engagement Day activities. If students have not selected their specific activities for Engagement Day, please contact Kathryn_E_McLeod@mcpsmd.org.
Seniors who have not completed their SSL hours are required to report to the auditorium at 7:45 am to complete activities for their SSL hours. Ms. Maxey and Ms. Fellows will facilitate these activities.

Seniors - Colleges Admissions Results
Continue to keep track of college admissions results and scholarship offers in Naviance! Once you hear back from colleges via email or letter, please record your results. You can also share this info with me and I can help with input. MCPS asks us to track this information every year, and we can add you to the display outside of the main office! 🙂

Note: Under $ Awarded, enter the amount. If you see that your award is renewable, please multiply the amount by four (for four years of college).
Mandatory Senior Survey - Due May 26
All MCPS seniors will be required to complete an exit survey before your last day, which is May 26. This survey will ask about post-high school plans, college acceptances, enrollment, scholarships, and services utilized while at SVHS. The survey can be found in Naviance, and is part of the senior check-out process as we prepare for graduation.
Mr. Nalda has set up the survey this year in a way that you can start now, and go back in and edit when you have finalized your plans. We know some of you are still figuring out plans or deciding which college you plan to attend (college signing deadline day is May 1st).

Military - U.S. Service Academy Summer Opportunities 2023
U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen would like to share information regarding an exciting opportunity that may be of interest to students this summer.
Juniors (students in the Class of 2024) who have an interest in learning about opportunities to attend a U.S. Service Academy for college are encouraged to apply to participate in a summer program. Each Academy’s summer program provides a week-long immersion into the academic, military, and social life of that Academy. The Academies are ranked among the top undergraduate public universities in the country. The U.S. Naval Academy also offers a Summer STEM Program for rising 9th-11th graders.

March 24 - 2023 NAACP Scholarship Award - $1,000 awards; senior; res. of Montgomery County; min 3.0 GPA; extracurricular activities; must participate in faith-based, religious-based, or volunteer activities (or employment); 2 references; include name of your current state Congress member and/or delegate (see link); 300-word essay; 3-4 paragraph essay; awards presented at the Annual Freedom Fund Dinner; see link for details.
March 29 - HSINTELLIGENCE Minority / Indigenous Nurse Leader Scholarship - 2-$750 awards; senior; first generation, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and person of color) student; interested in and planning to pursue studies in nursing; submit a 400-600 word essay on how you hope to help the world through your medical career and how you plan to positively impact the healthcare of minorities and marginalized groups.

April 28 - 2022-23 SVHS Booster Scholarships* - (*applications due to Mr. Nalda by noon on this date!) 2-$1,000 awards; senior at SVHS; min 3.0 cumulative unweighted GPA at the end of 1st semester of senior year; plan to pursue post high school education (technical school, community college or four-year university, etc.); completed all Student Service Learning (SSL) hours; earn(ed) a varsity letter on a team in their senior year OR be an active member of an SVHS sponsored club (Club activism will be confirmed by SVHS Club Sponsor); transcript; one page essay; resume.

WorkSource Montgomery, Maryland Department of Labor, Maryland Apprenticeship 2.0, and Montgomery County are proud to host this event where job seekers will be able to network and explore Apprenticeship opportunities! Meet with members of your local workforce development, as well as local businesses from IBEW Local 26, Plumbers Local5, Tech, NECA/IBEW Electrical, Southern Management Companies, Delaware Elevator, CVS Health, among other companies! Game Changer Conference for Young Males
The goal of The Game Changer Conference is to prepare our young males for a “Game Changer” experience by helping to regain and build their social emotional wellness, confidence, competencies, and values they need to get to the next level and become a Success Story. The aim is to raise awareness and promote student access and success, especially amongst male students by providing strategies to win with academics and athletics.
This free mentoring conference is geared toward Black or African American and Latino or Hispanic male students in grades 4 through 12. The conference theme is “The World is Shifting”. There are also workshop opportunities for parents.

IB Spotlight
Support Our IB Program by purchasing IB swag! Please support the IB Programs at SVHS and show your SVHS Pride by purchasing a T-shirt designed by Adriana Montes Lopez, a current SVHS sophomore and future IB Diploma candidate! The funds raised will be used to recognize and celebrate our amazing IB students! Please complete the order form and then pay cash or check (made out to SVHS) to Ms. Ezerski in Room 3510 or pay online.
MYP PP & IB LP: Last week, Mrs. Becraft hosted two workshops to help 10th graders complete the last step of the project- a final report reflecting on their experience. Students who missed the workshops or need additional help can attend support sessions on Wednesday, March 22nd (SAT day).
IB Practice Exams: Students had the opportunity to take a "Practice Exam" to address test anxiety and be better prepared for their IB exams that begin at the end of April. A BIG shout out to Ms. Adrian Costero-Saint-Denis who provided snacks for our students!
Donation Requests: We would love donations of snacks for mock exams, IB exams, support sessions, and/or monetary donations to support the celebration of IB students. Please contact Ms. Ezerski at Natasha_L_Ezerski@mcpsmd.org if you are willing to help!
LIBRARY MEDIA NEWS: WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH TRIVIA CONTEST & MCPL CTE BUILDING TRADES OPPORTUNITY
“That’s What She Said” Trivia Contest 💬
Come match quotes to their sources in our “That’s What She Said” trivia contest! Each quote was spoken by one of the authors or subjects of the books in our Women’s History Month book display. Students who successfully match the quotes to their sources will be entered to win the grand prize, a commemorative “Women Who Rock” box of Fruity Pebbles cereal. The drawing will take place during lunch on Thursday, March 3oth.
MCPL Virtual Events for Teens - New CTE Additions!
Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) is hosting a few events for teens in the coming months. Click on the links below to learn more!
MCPL’s Explore Careers in Building Trades Series for teens, run in collaboration with the Baltimore DC Metro Building Trades Council, is an excellent opportunity for that aligns with our CTE programming! The first session on April 10th presents a general overview of building and construction trades and will cover how to get started in a building trades career. The second session on May 10th will focus specifically on the finishing trades, including wall coverings, painting and industrial coatings, glazing, glasswork, drywall taping, signage, trade show display, and floor coverings. In this session, hear about a typical day as a finishing tradesperson and get all your questions answered!
Teen Investors Learn to invest in the stock market & make your money grow in this live interactive online program with Spark Business Academy. For teens, 13-18 years old. Virtual on Wednesdays, 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 4:30-5:30 pm
MCPL and the Washington Wizards have partnered to promote reading! Through March 31st, students can participate in a winter reading challenge for the chance to win 2 tickets to the April 9, 2023 Wizards game. Academic Support Opportunities
Academic Support Center
The Academic Support Center is open during lunch Monday through Friday in room 2109. Students can receive academic support with their regularly scheduled classes and their Project GRAD (credit recovery) courses. Students can also get support with organization, time management, and planning.
CARES Tutoring
Our CARES Tutoring program is intended to provide students with ongoing high-dosage tutoring in order to provide students with the skills necessary to be successful in their classes. Students that sign up for CARES must commit to attending weekly tutoring sessions.
Our CARES Tutoring program is currently full. Students can submit this form to be added to the waitlist and will be contacted if a spot becomes available.
Virtual Tutoring Opportunities
All MCPS students have access to free, virtual tutoring services through FEV Tutor and Tutor Me Education.
FEV Tutor and Tutor Me both:
- Offer free on-demand tutoring for homework help, no scheduling needed
- Offer free scheduled tutoring for ongoing support, scheduling required
- Record sessions, take session notes, and communicate directly with families.
- Can be accessed by students through Clever
FEV tutor does not use a camera and TutorMe uses a camera for tutor and student.
