What is the PSAT?
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) offered the morning of Wednesday, October 19th has two primary purposes. One, the PSAT is often considered a "Pre-SAT". The PSAT is nearly identical in format and evaluates the same skills as the SAT, which you may be taking as a junior or senior. The PSAT gives you a huge benefit in getting comfortable with the style of test, in addition to receiving feedback on what skills you should improve on. Second, all juniors that take the PSAT will have their score used as the qualifying test score for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
It is important to note that colleges and universities will NOT use these scores for admissions purposes, but it is GREAT practice for those students planning on going to a four-year school. The National Merit Scholar Program for juniors is extremely competitive. Typically the top 0.5% nationally of all test takers are recognized. However, there are many benefits to taking this test.
LASTLY, this test will cost $15. First you will sign up here and THEN pay Mrs. Chelsey Steffy, the CFHS Bookkeeper in the front office. Mrs. Steffy will give you the official test prep booklet when you pay your fees. The PSAT does offer fee waivers for students who show financial need. For example, juniors who are either enrolled in or eligible to participate in the Federal Free or Reduced Price Lunch program (FRPL) qualify to receive a fee waiver. If you believe that you fit this criterion or show financial need, please select the yes option below and see your school counselor to discuss the options.
