Robbinsville's Quarterly Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome Back!
Welcome back! We so look forward to seeing you and your students as we begin the 2019-2020 school year. It's been a busy summer of hiring, curriculum writing, professional development, and construction. The district is now ready to greet our learners and start off September on a high note.
If you're new to Robbinsville, each of these quarterly newsletters highlights a different district initiative in the areas or curriculum and/or instruction. This newsletter will focus on our new district vision and mission, our Robbinsville (Rville) Ready work, and how we're beginning to see the Rville Ready Skills in action. At the bottom of this page, you'll also see the dates for our upcoming Back to School Nights. Each school will share additional information about these nights; we hope to see you there. Here's to a wonderful school year!
Sincerely,
Dr. Kimberly Tew
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
New District Vision and Mission
Our Mission
The Robbinsville community commits to ensure that all students are Robbinsville Ready: Resilient and Self-Directed Scholars, Effective Communicators, Informed and Involved Citizens, Collaborative Team Players, Emotionally Intelligent Learners, and Innovative Thinkers.
Our Vision
The Robbinsville community promises to provide equitable access and opportunities for all students to flourish in a safe and inclusive environment.
We believe this new vision and mission embody our community's dedication to providing an equitable educational experience that produces well-rounded, highly-skilled learners.
What Does it Mean to be Robbinsville Ready?
Now, more than ever, modern life requires students to take what they learn in school and apply it at home, at work, in their communities, and in future academic pursuits. To prepare our students for the world of tomorrow, we must enhance today's learning environments. Our world is rapidly changing and we must consider what "college and career ready" means for our 21st century Robbinsville learners. To do so, Robbinsville teachers, administrators, parents, and students participated in focus groups and surveys about what they thought it meant to be "Robbinsville Ready," or what skills they collectively thought our graduates should attain. Then, a committee of diverse stakeholders reviewed the data for common themes and began identifying the six skills our community values the most. Please see the images below and this LINK for information about each of the chosen skills.
We are now in year 4 of this work and are asking our staff to intentionally embed these skills into their instruction and assessments. In the blurb below, one of our teacher leaders, Jessica Ventre, shares the project based learning experience she and fellow fourth grade teachers Ms. Wilson, Ms. Buznitsky, Ms. Ehrenberg, and Mrs. Rosol designed during the 2018-2019 school year. This group piloted what became known as the "Rville Reach-Out," an authentic project-based assessment where 4th graders were asked to solve real-world issues. Students presented their solutions to experts in the field and various teachers, administrators, and community members. During their presentations, they were assessed on their ability to effectively communicate, innovate, and collaborate. In 2019-2020, we intend to extend this pilot to the entire 4th grade as well as research ways to implement more authentic assessments in other grade levels. That way, the district will be able to provide consistent feedback about student progress in each of the Robbinsville Ready skills.
