Miss Brown's Bulletin
Week of February 8-12
Valentine's Day Celebration
We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Friday, February 12 following recess/lunch at 12:45 p.m. Your child may bring in a decorated box for valentine's, but this will need to be completed at home. I will have bags for those who do not have a decorated box. Class lists were sent home last week in Monday folders. If you need another, please contact me ASAP so I can get one printed and sent home. We will spend the hour passing out Valentine's and playing a few games. If you are interested in sending in any of the following for the party, please contact me and let me know:
- Napkins
- Prizes for Games
- Candy Hearts (1 box per student)
- Drinks (1 per student)
Mad Minutes
Several students have been sharing they have been studying their multiplication facts at home, and this is great! Remember to check Monday folders and communicate with your child to see which facts that are currently working to Master. Students will have until May to Master these facts and earn their ice cream sundae for our multiplication celebration!
Monthly Reading Reward
We had 14 out of 23 students choose to be Champion Readers for the month of January. I would LOVE to see that number increase for the month of February! Remember to have your child mark their planner calendars each night as they read and provide a signature to show you witnessed them reading at home. Your child must read 400 minutes or more (20 min, 5 nights a week) to earn the reward.

HELP!
It's that time of year where supplies are dwindling. If you could spare to send in a box of tissues or two for the class, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm noticing several students have broken or lost their head phones. Students need headphones daily for interactive learning through Compass. If cost is an issue, please let me know so I can help and get your child the materials they need to succeed.

We Are Learning To...
Language Arts
We finished our chapter book, Dragon of the Red Dawn, and will now be focusing on our informational text about Japan. We will use this text to ask and answer questions about the text to gain a deeper understanding of what the text is about. We will also be working on using our context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words.
We will also begin a new writing unit that involves research. Students will spend a couple of weeks researching and writing an informational piece about the culture of an assigned place.

Math
We will be working on word problems that include all operations and more than one step. We will also continue to look at the different properties of multiplication and how we can use them to solve multiplication and division problems.
We will be wrapping up the unit this week, so your kiddos can expect a quiz over Topic E on Tuesday. Be on the lookout for the Topic F newsletter mid-week to help your kiddo with these skills at home.
