Harriet Martineau was born in Norwich England on June 12th, 1802. She was born into a middle class family who were manufacturers at the beginning of the 19th century. Along the way she had to over come a lot of obstacles including, deafness, loss of taste, smell, and sense. Also she had extensive nervous disorder, along with heart disease at one point. Her father had passed when she was in her early 20s and she had to do hack writing and needlework to make pennies for her and the family. On the good side she did gain a wide reading public when she published her short story series from 1832-1834.
