Migrant Parent to Present at National Conference
One of our outstanding migrant parents, Maricela Garcia of Scottsbluff, will be presenting at the National Association of State Directors of Migrant Education Conference in Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Garcia's presentation is entitled, "The story of a Farmworker Mother: Raising Successful Daughters, Overcoming Social, Economic and Cultural Obstacles. The oldest daughter has a career in the medical field. The second will earn her master's degree this year. The third is in the United States Air Force. Her youngest will graduate from high school this year. Congratulations, Maricela! We are so excited to see her share her success with other parents from across the country!
Parent Cafe: Homework Help
The number one parent training topic on our parent survey this year was Homework Help. In January, migrant parents attended a Parent Cafe in Scottsbluff where they shared ideas on the challenges, successes, needs and solutions they have found. They had great discussions and learned from each other. Here is some of their advice for other parents:
· Have your kids talk with their teachers after school to get help
· Have confidence in your children
· Make sure your child has the books and materials they need
· Watch out for late assignments – your grade drops
· Call, e-mail, or meet with your child’s teacher
· Make sure your child has a quiet place to do homework
· Sometimes, we as parents learn with the children
· Make sure your child takes their homework to school
· Giving rewards for good grades helps
· Make sure that homework is the first thing they do after school, before anything else

ESU 13 Migrant Education Program
The ESU 13 Migrant Education Program is a Title 1, Part C program under the Nebraska Department of Education. The mission of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that migrant children fully benefit from the same free public education provided to other children. To achieve this, the MEP supports educational programs for migrant children to help reduce the educational disruptions and other problems that result from repeated moves.
