Welcome
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Corner
According to CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) "We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions." RCPS supports the integration of SEL throughout the schools across the district.
During November, the scholars learned about Stress during their SEL specials class. Stress is a mental strain caused by adverse circumstances. Something unpleasant can cause bad stress which releases cortisol into your body. Cortisol is a hormone that increases heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Bad stress tells you that you failed and to do something different.
We can relieve stress by taking deep breaths, (breathe in like smelling a flower and blowing it out like blowing out a candle), taking a walk, listening to music, talking to a friend, drawing a picture, and changing our mind with positive affirmations self-talk.
SEL at Home- Earlier in the year, our scholars were taught about Mindful Mornings. Remind scholars of this as they prepare for their day. This time of year can be very stressful, take some time to relax and do things that you enjoy. You might want to try the Mindful Morning routine with your scholar.

One AVID strategy that is being highlighted this month is STAR notetaking. STAR notetaking is a strategy that gives scholars multiple opportunities to add to and review their notes. The purpose of STAR notetaking is for scholars to be able to better understand and comprehend their notes, which they will use to be successful on assessments. STAR notetaking is a great strategy that scholars can utilize throughout their educational experience that will help to increase their mastery and understanding of skills and concepts.
Scholars are required to maintain an AVID binder. We conduct monthly AVID binder checks to ensure scholars have all the required supplies. Scholars receive 15 Class Dojo points for having a completed binder. Scholars can use the dojo points at the monthly PBIS store.
AVID at Home- Please encourage your child to reference their notes to support them with studying for tests and quizzes. Reviewing their notes will also assist with homework completion. Reinforcing the organization of school materials and personal spaces will further support their organization skills.
