Cougar Connect (Boletín)
Week of October 5, 2020 (Semana del 5 de octubre de 2020)
New Block Schedule Begins Tomorrow (El nuevo horario de bloques comienza mañana)
In case you missed the special announcement on Thursday about the new block schedule, here is the link. A copy of the new bell schedule is on the Kennedy website under “Kennedy Distance Learning,” and I have also included a PDF printable version attached below. Since these next few weeks have some irregularities here is the schedule:
Monday, October 5: A Day (Block Schedule)
Tuesday, October 6: Super Super Minimum Day (Extended Period 1 only until 10:00 am
with special asynchronous work to follow).
Thursday, October 8: A Day (Block Schedule)
Friday, October 9: B Day (Block Schedule)
Monday, October 12: No School
Tuesday, October 13: B Day (Block Schedule)
Thursday, October 15: A Day (Block Schedule)
Friday, October 16: B Day (Block Schedule)
Wednesdays will remain unchanged (although in PowerSchool it will show all seven classes since students could be working on asynchronous work for any of these classes). Those who have Meek, Reynoso, and Emig as a homeroom teacher still have homeroom on Wednesday instead of Friday as they have since the beginning of school. Because these three teachers don’t teach on Fridays and in order for it to be equitable, those who have them during the Thursday block will not have PE either. Instead all students who have these three teachers for PE have two options: asynchronous PE where they will record a video of their workout and turn it in for credit (for Thursday/Friday PE) or they can attend a live session (in which cameras must be on to get credit) on Thursdays at 2:10 pm. PE teachers will share more details with their classes this week.
With this block schedule change we will start to offer more enrichment. Some opportunities will be on Wednesdays and others will be in the afternoons on the other days. Choir has already started on Wednesdays at 9:30 am. Other opportunities starting soon are: Jazz Band, Drama Club, Robotics Club, Mindfulness Club, Book Club, and Dungeons & Dragons. If you are interested in starting a club, please contact an administrator.
Super Minimum Day on Tuesday (Día Súper Mínimo el martes)
District-wide there is a super minimum day on Tuesday so staff can get some extra training. There will be a couple more like this on Tuesdays this year. This Tuesday students will only have an extended homeroom, which will go until around 10 am or so and then they will have some asynchronous work to finish.
During homeroom time, those who haven’t finished the iReady test will need to do so. Homeroom teachers regularly check in with students one-on-one and will have some additional time to do this on Tuesday. Students will start working on an assignment related to the upcoming election. Tuesday, October 6, happens to be the day in California where students get to cast their vote in a mock election. Students will learn more about the California propositions and get to vote for who they want to be the next President of the United States. We will share our results next weekend in the Cougar Connect and hopefully will have the data from the state-wide mock election to see how ours compare.
Supply Pick Up (Recogida de suministros)
There are still many 7th and 8th grade families who did not come to the materials pick up last week. All students need some new materials. If you missed the pick ups last week you can come tomorrow, Monday, October 5, during the 6th grade pick up times, which are 12:00-1:00 pm or 3:00-5:00 pm. (If you still can’t make those times then contact the office to make other arrangements). Drive up in front of the 100-wing in the main Kennedy parking lot like you did for Maze Day. (If you need to walk or bike that is okay, but please make sure you have a mask on and are social distancing).
For 7th and 8th grade families we need you to have a paper to hold up with the following information:
Student’s First and Last Name
Spanish Immersion or Non-Immersion
Note if your student has an August, September, or October birthday
Note if your student has Marti (Computer Science or Robotics) or Khan (Project Lead the Way - PLTW) for their elective
6th grade families, please have the following information on your sheet of paper that you hold up:
Student’s First and Last Name
Spanish Immersion or Non-Immersion
Name of Math Teacher
Note if your student has an August, September, or October birthday
Khan (Project Lead the Way - PLTW) para su clase electiva.
Zoom
If you are having trouble getting onto a Zoom meeting I am re-emphasizing these steps I shared last week:
1) Login to Clever.
2) Click on “RCSD Zoom Login.”
3) Click “Sign In” and then when prompted, choose to sign in with Google.
4) Now go back to the Zoom link in your Google Classroom.
Note: After you finish one class you must logout of the Zoom link in order to be able to login to the next Zoom link.
If you are still having issues then call the office. If you can’t get through, then email administrators.
Students, if a teacher is out please make sure you read carefully in Google Classroom to know if there is a sub and if the sub will be using Zoom or Google Classroom. If a teacher is out and isn’t able to share their Zoom links ahead of time then Google Meet will be used instead.

FUN WAY TO CONNECT WITH OTHER STUDENTS!
WEDNESDAYS AT 11:00
WE WILL BE READING:
Chase's memory just went out the window.
Chase doesn't remember falling off the roof. He doesn't remember hitting his head. He doesn't, in fact, remember anything. He wakes up in a hospital room and suddenly has to learn his whole life all over again . . . starting with his own name.
He knows he's Chase. But who is Chase? When he gets back to school, he sees that different kids have very different reactions to his return.
Some kids treat him like a hero. Some kids are clearly afraid of him.
One girl in particular is so angry with him that she pours her frozen yogurt on his head the first chance she gets.
Pretty soon, it's not only a question of who Chase is--it's a question of who he was ... and who he's going to be.
Contact Ms. Cooper, ecooper@rcsdk8.net, if you are interested.

¡PLÁTICAS EN VIVO!
¡UNA MANERA DIVERTIDA DE CONECTARSE CON OTROS ESTUDIANTES!
MIÉRCOLES A LAS 11:00 AM
ESTAREMOS LEYENDO:

Now that we have switched over to Zoom we need to change the links for Wednesday PE. This will also help us to fine-tune attendance since Zoom track can when students enter and leave. Here is the sheet with the Zoom links that can also be found on our website, www.rcsdk8.net/kennedy, under “Kennedy Distance Learning.”
Students Taking Pictures (Alumnos tomando fotos)
In the morning announcements on Friday I reminded students that taking pictures of the computer screen and posting them online are both against the AUP agreement that families signed at the beginning of the year as part of the Back To School Update. This could lead to suspension and police involvement. This is also a reminder that once you do something online there is a digital footprint that never goes away.
The USDA approved an extension to the free meal program through December 2020, which is great news. Here are some highlights.
Effective, 9/1/20, free meals are available to children 2-18 years old.
All families welcome, not restricted to RCSD, Connect, or KIPP students
No meal card is required
Students do not have to be present
Attached below are two fliers with all of the details about how and where you can get meals at RCSD locations. Starting on September 14, there are some new changes. Mondays families can pick up meals for students for Monday through Wednesday, and on Thursdays families can pick up meals for the rest of the week. Again, please read the fliers for more details. We know there are circumstances in which families cannot attend the designated pick up times, but we don’t want any student to go hungry and not have food because of this. Please call 650-423-2279 to request more information about meal delivery.

News From the Community (Noticias de la comunidad)
Shadowing at Sequoia HS in Fall 2020 (Visitar Sequoia HS en otoño de 2020)
Important Note: We are NOT planning on inviting 8th grade students into live Zoom classes. Our teachers are facing challenging enough circumstances already without the added logistics of welcoming visitors.
Currently 8th grade students and families can register via the SHADOW PAGE of the Sequoia HS website and THIS REGISTRATION FORM. The registration (as in years past) asks for shadow curricular and extracurricular interests. Based on this information, the shadow with one of our hosts. The host will then have a prescribed set of steps that they take
Email a general letter introducing themselves and "welcoming" the shadow
Providing three video links (Virtual Orientation, About Sequoia and the 2020 Virtual Lib Dub)
Providing electronic copies of resources (important list of contacts, campus map, social media accounts to follow, course preference form, other materials from the program planning handbook, etc)
Details about supplemental informational events (IB Info Night, Open House, 8th Grade Welcome Night, etc.)
As part of their registration, shadows/parents will also be asked for their preferred method of contact (phone call to student, phone call to parent, text message, zoom, FaceTime, etc.) Sequoia host students will reach out via the preferred medium, as well as provide contact information for any necessary follow up.
We will also provide
Student Panels - Subject-specific student panel sessions will be held weekly (Wednesday, 2:00 PM) and cover a range of topics.
Parent Informational Sessions - Modeled to mimic the in-person sessions we held each shadow day in years past. I'll host these sessions (45 minute target... stretch to 60 minutes if necessary). I'll be joined by 2-3 volunteers from the PTSA who can provide input from a parent perspective on the Sequoia experience. We will offer both morning and evening sessions.
Here is the link to all of the upcoming sessions.
