THINK, CREATE, SHARE, GROW
7th graders explore Utah tribes
Mrs. Armour's seventh-grade Honors Utah History class at Mt. Ogden Junior High has been working on a unit of the seven Native American tribes who originally lived in Utah’s Great Basin. In groups, students created posters using information from print and online sources, portraying the unique history, architecture, use of land, spirituality, artistry, and influence of their designated tribe. The class then had a “gallery walk” of the finished posters, and each student wrote notes comparing tribes. Their take home assignment was to write an essay that compared and contrasted two tribes. Mrs. Armour and the District Teacher Librarians hope to collaborate again next semester.
5th-Grade Native American research
District Teacher Librarians recently worked with Mrs. Montague’s fifth-grade class at Horace Mann. To develop background knowledge for a unit on colonization, the students researched Native American life before the arrival of Europeans. Using books and online resources, students gathered information about climate, dwelling, and daily life of a tribe. They used their research to write an essay and create a diorama. For the students, the highlight of the project was working with a partner to create the diorama. For the DTLs, the highlight was watching the creative and confident students teach visitors and other students using their new knowledge. Kudos to Mrs. Montague for a great class, and thanks to the students for letting us work with them on this project.
Library Spotlight
As many of us already know, Ogden High School’s renovated library is a beautiful space. Library clerks Marianna Bingham and Debra Francis have added some personal touches with signage for students to help navigate the A Day/B Day world of high school, as well as literature-based displays to encourage independent reading.
What IS an Information Specialist?
In today's world of 24/7 access to information from an overwhelming number of sources, Information Specialists play an important role:
- guiding students in accessing, evaluating, and using information
- building on students’ prior knowledge and guide construction of new knowledge
- integrating information technology with student projects
- providing expertise in the ethical use of information
The challenge for students is that access to information is easy, but evaluating and using the information in a school project is not. For example, a search on Google can find thousands of hits. Information Specialists can provide the instruction and support they need and guide them to K-12 sites and databases.
So…if you would like to:
- research weather in Florida
- evaluate information for accuracy
- discover how many Native American tribes live in Utah
- cite information accurately
- direct students to reliable resources...
contact a District Teacher Librarian for help with the research process!
