April 2019 Principal's Corner
Spring has not Sprung-Its Still Cold. During the month of April, Grades 3 through 5 will be participating in Scantron Testing for our State Accountability Measure. The expectation is for each child to have ONE year of academic growth. Our teachers have been focusing on the instructional strengths and weaknesses of individual students based on their mastery of grade-level standards throughout the school year. Providence Elementary School will administer the tests during the week of April 8 through April 12. Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, eats a good breakfast and is at school on time prepared to do their very best on the test.
ATTENDANCE IS A MUST!!!!
What is Scantron?
The Performance Series® by Scantron assessment makes it easy for teachers and administration to identify each child’s progress throughout the school year. It provides the diagnostic information needed to place your child and manage instruction in both whole and small groups.
Performance Series® by Scantron is a web-based, computer-adaptive test that is used to locate individual ability levels and demonstrate academic growth over time.
April 8th - 12th Providence 3rd through 5th Grades will be participating in this Test!
April is Military Child Month
Every April is Month of the Military Child. This special month is set aside to honor the resiliency of the children who are a part of military families. The month of the Military Child started back in 1986 by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger who wanted to have a way to recognize military children and their sacrifices. Now is the perfect time to let your children know just how brave and amazing you think they are — today and every day.
Wear Purple on April 15th April 15th is Purple Up! Day, an opportunity for Americans everywhere to show support for military children. Pick your favorite shade of purple and wear it all day long to raise awareness of the sacrifices military families make, but especially kids. Let your child know you’re wearing purple especially for them.
PTSA Military Child Luncheon TBA
With life’s chaos, it can be challenging to spend quality time with your children. This is especially true when you’re a military family just trying to get through a long deployment or settling into a new duty station. Come to school and eat lunch with your child. If you have multiple kids, let the teacher know if you have multiple children so that we can make each child feel special.

Autism Awareness Month - April 2019
National Autism Awareness Month 2019
The first National Autism Awareness Month was declared by the Autism Society in April 1970.
The aim of this month is educate the public about autism. Autism is a complex mental condition and developmental disability, characterized by difficulties in the way a person communicates and interacts with other people. Autism can be present from birth or form during early childhood (typically within the first three years). Autism is a lifelong developmental disability with no single known cause.
Message from Nurse Michelle
With this year’s cold and flu season hopefully coming to an end, there are a few housekeeping tasks that need attention.
1. Please make sure we have good telephone numbers for parents and emergency contacts. It is miserable for your children to be sitting in the nurse’s office with vomiting, diarrhea or fevers while waiting for a parent or another contact to be reached.
2. It is your responsibility as a parent to pick up your children in a timely manner when they are sick with an illness that excludes them from school. Making your child wait over an hour to get picked up when they are sick is not in their best interest.
3. Students are not allowed to bring ANY medication to school without a Physician Prescription Authorization. If there is a medication that they need to take during the school day, a parent or guardian MUST bring the medication in with the Physician’s Prescription Authorization form.
This is a State policy. Also, please make sure the medication is in a prescription bottle with the prescription label, or in an unopened box/bottle if it is an over the counter medication.

2nd Semester -DAC Meetings
2018/2019 Feeder Pattern Meetings
The DAC will hold public meetings for each High Schools feeder pattern. Everyone is welcome to attend any of these meetings. This will be an open forum for questions, concerns, and community feedback. The DAC would like to hear your stories of how the consent order is creating positive change, and understand areas that still need improvement. The DAC is responsible for monitoring Huntsville City Schools implementation of the consent order, by receiving community feedback, reviewing data, making recommendations, and filing reports with the Court. Your input is a very valuable part of this process.
