Important Information and Reminders
1. Reading Logs/Reflections:
It's a brand new month! That means your students will begin a new month of reading reflections, and this month their AR QUIZZES WILL COUNT!
Remember.... students are required to read and complete 3 reflections.
- 1 Nonfiction Book
- 1 Chapter Book
- 1 Book of Choice
Our Reading Logs/Reflections will be due on the last week of November, when we return from Thanksgiving break. (Monday, November 30)
Please remember that your student should be reading at home every night! If your child reads all three of their books, I will make sure they complete their reflections in class by the end of the month... so please encourage your students to read at home!
2. AR Quizzes:
Please be reminded... AR quizzes will only be taken during school. I know in the past, students could take quizzes at home. This year, students will only be allowed to take quizzes during the school day. We have the iPads twice a week for your students to test!
3, AR Goals:
If your child reads, takes an AR quiz, and scores a passing grade on THREE AR quizzes by the end of November, they will receive a dress down day at the end of the month for reaching their AR goal :)
4, Media Center:
We visit the media center as a class every Monday! Please make sure your student brings back their books once they have finished reading them so they can bring home new ones! Please note that this year students with books that are not returned or renewed within two weeks will be charge 5 cents per day overdue.
5. Prizes:
Students are beginning to fill up their signature sheets and go to the prize box!!!! This makes me one very happy teacher. PLEASE HELP US BY SENDING IN AWESOME PRIZES! We want the students to WANT to go... this helps maintain wonderful behavior! :)

Field Trip Fun at Hillcrest Orchards!
At Hillcrest Orchards your students were able to enjoy some yummy apple cider, learn about how to feed cows, practice taking kernels off corn for cows to eat, practice and ACTUALLY milk a cow, learn about cows and bulls, visit a farmhouse museum to learn about life on the farm in the past, enjoy a snack outside, visit an apple museum, take a wagon ride through a nature trail, see some animals, and see some very fun and FAST pig races to end our adventure!
I hope your students have lots of stories to share with you this evening about our field trip fun! It was a great day in 2nd grade.
A big thank you to our parent chaperones for joining us on this trip! We hope you enjoyed it as well :)

Canned Food Drive at FSAPS
Your students can bring in cans from Nov. 2 - Nov. 18. They should bring these cans to me so I can count them for 2nd grade. If you drop them off at the front office, please make sure you let them know which homeroom they should go to so we can count them in our total number of cans collected.
We will count how many cans each grade receives and divide it by the number of students in that grade to find the average per student... the top 3 highest numbers will win a dress down day! :D
Let's go 2nd grade!!

A visit from the Atlanta Amen Clinic for Red Ribbon Week
Your students spent part of their Wednesday morning during Red Ribbon Week with a therapist from the Amen clinic. Therapist, Julie, from Atlanta Amen Clinics spent this time reading and discussing healthy lifestyles with our students. It began with a discussion about our brain, what our brain does, and how we should be taking care of our brain. Your students gave suggestions about what our brain does for us, and ways that we can make good decisions to help our brain stay healthy.
The Amen Clinic therapistread a story titled "What I Learned from a Penguin". Your students enjoyed listening to the story and making connections to their lives. This story is a fun rhyming story about how to help people change and think positive! This children's book is based on a true story as experienced by Dr. Amen himself. One day while watching a penguin named Fat Freddy take part in a stunt show at a local amusement park, he is astonished to see the penguin perform so well. Frustrated by his own son's behavior, Dr. Amen decides to find out how she got the penguin to follow all of her directions. Through clever rhyme and storytelling, the trainer shares with Dr. Amen the power of positive reinforcement. Your students enjoyed listening along to the story, and making connections to their lives.
At the end of this read aloud, the Amen Clinic therapist discussed with our FSA students how this story can help us think about our daily behavior. Our FSA students gave some great suggestions about how important it is to help others feel happy instead of sad, to encourage others daily, to respect others, and to treat others how we would like to be treated! The students were able to take away a great message inspired by the story they heard. Instead of our FSA students having a collection of Penguins like the boy in the story, our students can create a positive collection of their own to take with them every day. The students were able to start this positive collection with some great words of encouragement that they were able to carry with them as they left our assembly. Each of your second graders left feeling happy with a note in their pocket containing a great message...
"You are a great friend"
"You have great talent"
"Everyone is gifted"
"There is beauty even in failure"
"You are worth it"
"You matter to those around you"
It was a great way to continue our discussion about healthy lifestyle choices for Red Ribbon Week with our 2nd graders :)
Home Visits
At FSAPS we do home visits. It is a wonderful opportunity for teachers and families to get to know one another. If you are interested in scheduling a home visit, please send an e-mail to our home visit coordinator, Mrs. Unal at junal@fultonscienceacademy.org and give us three available dates for your child's home visit program. We will get back to you and confirm a date. Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes.

Curriculum Corner
Reading/Language Arts:
We are continuing with Unit 2 of our Reading Street curriculum this week. We will be reading a story called One Good Turn Deserves Another. This is a folk tale about working together to solve problems and how the coyote in our story helps a mouse. We will be discussing the vowel patterns a, ai, and ay this week, continue to practice cause and effect, and we will be introducing possessive nouns!
Ms. P's Math Class:
Ms. P's class will continue to practice multiplication all week long! Your students are learning a "groups of each" strategy in class that they should apply to their Homework Packet this week. This is a great way for us to begin practicing multiplication!
Ms. Minor's Math Class:
Ms. Minor's class will be continuing with multiplication. Students are learning a variety of ways to solve and show multiplication problems. Ask your students about these at home!
Science:
This week we will continue to discuss the Water Cycle in our Science curriculum. We will also begin discussing and taking note of the weather!
Social Studies:
We will continue to work on reading maps this week during our Social Studies lessons. We will be finishing up this chapter this week. We will do a fun in-class project to create some maps of our own. Your students will enjoy this!
Character Education: This week we will continue to practice and work together on focusing attention and learning different and specific ways to be good listeners.
