Help Your Child Succeed: Build the Habit of Good Attendance Early
September was Attendance Awareness Month
Attending school has a huge impact on student success.
We realize some absences are for health or other unavoidable reasons. But, when students are absent 2 or more days per month (or 18 days over the school year) they can fall far behind in what they learn. Excused and unexcused absences both mean missing classroom learning time. Absences can add up. This year we want to do our best to encourage every student to do their best to miss no more than 9 days of school, or an average of 1 day per month. To achieve this goal, we need your help.
What you can do:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones and tablets at bedtime
- Check with our school nurse if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
- Avoid scheduling vacations, or to the best of your ability, doctor's appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to your child's teacher of our school social worker for help if your child is feeling anxious about going to school.
- Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your child to school.
Did You know?
· Attending school regularly helps kids feel better about school and themselves.
· Good attendance is a life skill that will help your child’s success throughout their life span.
· Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
· Missing 10% (or about 18 total days in a school year or averaging 2 days per month) can make it harder to learn to read.
· Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
· Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
· Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
