The South Surrenders
General Lee and his troops surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Grant made them lay down their arms and they were free to go home. General Grant also ordered 3 days worth of food to be sent to Lee's hungry troops. Several days later, the Confederate forces surrendered to General Sherman. President Jefferson Davis was then captured in Georgia on May 10. The Civil War was over at last.
