#sparkinfo. Weekly Update
Week #12- November 5th-9th, 2018
We are so grateful for all of the incredible things happening at Pickens Middle School
October can be a long month, but it was highlighted by so many great accomplishments at Pickens Middle School!
We began our month with our open house. It was great to see so many families that night as we discussed digital responsibility, an OLWEUS presentation(Our anti-bullying program), and visited classrooms. Thank you for your partnership! Our students will be so much more successful when we work together!
Accolades in October included:
1) An undefeated volleyball championship!
2) The marching band won the state championship and included a number of middle school participants!
3) Our student council was recognized as the best middle school at the district rally
4) Our robotics team did so well in their first major competition. They finished 1st, 3rd, and 5th respectively out of many teams! One team was crowned tournament champions and qualified for the state championship while another won the judges award!
5) Our Chorus was recognized as most respectful at the SWU choral festival!
6) Our newest Beta Club members were inducted!
7) Mrs. Lawson's, Mrs. Lee's, and Mrs. Mellett's homerooms are intramural volleyball champs!
8) The Pickens High Girls Golf Team made a run at the state and finished second. Several students from #sparknation! were on the team!
9) Many students qualified for our end of the nine weeks #sparkcelebration because of their grades and behavior!!
10) Molly Spearman visited to see our assembly model and helped recognize several of our incredible students!
These accolades do not include many of the great things our students do on campus every day! If your student is not yet involved in an extracurricular activity, we would encourage them to check out one of the following opportunities:

Spark Spotlight!!
Ms. Douglas and Mrs. Reid are leading by example!
I feel so blessed to have so many people going above and beyond in their own way!
This past week, a Kudzu representative and Dr. Lackey paid a visit to our campus. They were here to recognize Kelley Reid for her perfect attendance in the first quarter! We all know that their is a correlation between student success and attendance! Chronic absenteeism is compacted when teachers and staff who work with students are not present in that this represents more time when students are out of routine during the instructional day. We are so proud of Mrs. Reid for earning this recognition! She earned a $100.00 gift card as an incentive!
Mrs. Reid and Kudzu have inspired me to step up our recognition game in this regard. Beginning in December, we will recognize from within for attendance. Monthly, faculty and staff with no absences will get to spin our #sparkpresence wheel and earn some great prizes! Congratulations again Kelley!
Connie Douglas is Pickens Middle's own director of bands! If you haven't been paying attention, she takes her job very seriously and works tirelessly to inspire a love of music in our students.
Here is what one of Ms. Douglas's peers said about her in our spark spotlight. "Connie works SO hard for our students during AND after school! She has helped the PHS marching band reach state champion status! Connie also has many responsibilities she is juggling outside of school, and she keeps going even when it gets tough!! What a great influencer of our students!!" I could not agree more with this commendation! Thank you Ms. Douglas! Keep up the great work!
Ms. Douglas should be very proud of this group of middle schoolers!
#sparkpride!
Mrs. Reid was given a great prize for perfect attendance!
