Principal's Corner
Thank you to everyone who attended our annual Literacy Night. It was great seeing everyone enjoying the activities. March is a very busy month with all the events coming up around the districts, but it’s also a time of year to remember the importance of reading. Reading at home with your child, or listening to your child read to you is a great way to keep them growing as readers.
Some key points from the National Association of Elementary School Principals are below. Encouraging children to read at home is one of the most powerful ways a parent can support students' learning. Just 15 minutes of reading at home per day can make a difference.
Always have books on hand.
Focus on your child's interest.
Read out loud together.
Make it a routine.
Be a patient listener. (Don't finish your child's sentences, give them time to make out the word or phrase they are reading.)
Eliminate distractions during reading time.
Ask questions. Open ended questions (not yes or no questions) are the best to ask. Ex.: "What do you think will happen next?", "Why do you think the character did that?"
Read beyond books. Read magazine articles, trip directions, comic strips, etc.

Media Center News
In February students focused on being safe on the Internet!
2nd grade students learned to Keep Safe, Keep Away and Keep Telling. Second grade students learned to keep their personal information safe. They also learned to keep away from Internet strangers. And finally to keep telling a trusted adult if something makes them uncomfortable on the Internet. 2nd graders visited Ruff Ruffman on PBS kids to learn more about Internet Safety. In March we will be focusing on reading month activities, reading books by Buffy Silverman for our author visit at the end of the month and nonfiction text features.
3rd grade students learned to Keep Safe, Keep Away and Keep Telling. Third grade students learned to keep their personal information safe. They also learned to keep away from Internet strangers. And finally to keep telling a trusted adult if something makes them uncomfortable on the Internet. 3rd graders visited FBI Cyber Safety to learn more about Internet Safety. In March we will be focusing on reading month activities, reading books by Buffy Silverman for our author visit at the end of the month and nonfiction text features.
A huge thank you to everyone that came to Literacy Night! It was a big success with lots of books given away! Happy March and Happy Reading!

Physical Education Fun
We are coming to an end of our Kids Heart Challenge celebration. Thank you to everyone who helped register and raise donations. The more we raise as a school, the more we get back to spend on P.E. equipment, the more prizes our students get, but most importantly, the bigger the difference we make for people that need help with their hearts. Our total is looking to be just over $5,000. Our final total will be in the next Steeby Star.
I have discovered an excellent exercise app that is free, family friendly, and easy to use. There are workouts that you can organize by how much equipment you have (including none), part of the body you want to work, difficulty level, and even length of workout time. I would love if you downloaded the app and did some workouts with your family from time to time, and they would love it too! The app is called Nike Training Club. My main goal is to teach my students to be physically active for a lifetime, and an app like this is great for that.
Students of the month:
2nd grade: Makayla Boverhof, Salinger Simmons, Christian Kopet, and Mason Graczyk.
3rd grade: Avarie Cronin, Jordan Grevenstuk, Logan Hoevenaar, and Asher Kemp.
