Provide an infrastructure of products, systems, and services that supports district initiatives and expands the learning environment for students and teachers.

Network Services will be creating a web proxy for ADFS so that students and teachers will be able to login in to Clever and other curricular services in order that students can use MyON. This District-wide literacy initiative is vital for enhancing reading opportunities for our students.

This action and configuration directly relates to the IT Services vision that 'expands the learning environment for students and teachers'.

Safe Schools Training

The district, through Human Resources, has provided high quality professional development opportunities for employees. Recently, you should have received a series of training modules assigned specifically for you.

Please be sure to complete your Safe Schools training modules by the due date assigned.

OKCPS Board Meeting

There is but one item on the Board agenda that it related to IT Services. The District social media policy was inadvertently left off the July 1 Board agenda and this is to rectify that error. Additionally, the policy number is changing from the previous index.

How To Burn Yourself Out In 90 Days

Justin Baeder is the Director of The Principal Center. He's an advocate of working smarter and shares prolifically on social media and targeted communications. Although geared toward site leaders, we can transfer some of these to our work environment.

  • Genuinely care about your students
  • Hold yourself to high standards
  • Do what needs to be done, and solve the problems that only you can solve for your school
  • Support your teachers
  • Deal with conflict
  • Work at nights and on weekends
  • Bring your whole self—heart and soul—to your work

In other words, do all of the normal stuff that instructional leaders do.

The job itself is a recipe for burnout—you don't need to do anything out of the ordinary.

Burnout is a predictable consequence of being in this job—if you're missing one thing.

There's a simple antidote against burnout:


If you let this job have all of you, it'll take all you have to give, and more. But if you have boundaries, you can do all of the above, in good conscience, and still carve out a life for yourself.

  • Time to relax.
  • Space to not worry for a few hours.
  • Room for your family and relationships that matter to you.
  • (Heck, even a chance to watch Netflix or whatever reality TV show gives you a good laugh.)

Here are 2 ways to create boundaries for yourself:

1. Leave on time

  • Are you working past dinnertime on a routine basis?
  • You can stay all night if you want. It won't help.
  • Don't worry—your work won't run away while you're gone. It'll be there waiting for you.

Give yourself a fixed time that you leave, and if you don't have a school event, go home.

Parkinson's Law states that "work expands to fill the time available for its completion."

The implication? If you set a firm "go home" time each day, you'll work smarter and get just as much done.

Staying late has sharply diminishing returns. Set the boundary.

2. Do something that isn't urgent every day.

  • Read a book.
  • Color with your kids.
  • Have a hobby.

No, you don't "have time." But life is for what we decide it's for, and if we only ever give our time to our work...that's not much of a life. Even when you're at work, make time for more than the tyranny of the urgent.

Make time to learn and grow. Being a professional is meant to be more than an endless grind. Set a boundary around the urgent, and give your time to what deserves it, not what's clamoring for it the loudest.

ACT Framework

Accountability, Collaboration, and Tenacity

I recently discovered the ACT Framework for running healthy and effective IT organizations. In light of recent friction, I think it's important to review these important components and establish expectations.

Accountability. Truly own the problem. If you discover that a resolution to a problem was due to an action, a configuration, or a setting that is within your division's purview, then own it, celebrate it, and document it. Change and Configuration management's purpose is to offer greater agility and faster problem/incident resolution, thus giving better quality of service. We are about high quality service and we must accountable to each other and ourselves if we are going to consistently provide high-quality service.

Collaboration. Inter-departmental collaboration is an expectation.....not an exception. We must work together, and not necessarily in isolation, to achieve the best resolutions. As 21st century knowledge workers, we can no longer sit anonymously behind a computer monitor and never talk with and interact with others, whether that be intradepartment, interdepartment, or customers.

Tenacity. As you know, not all incidents can be resolved instantly. However, service requests that take longer than 30 days is beyond crazy. We stick with problems and we don't give up until we find solutions. We must be determined to work for the customer, not what is easy for us to manage.

We cannot tolerate division between our departments. Yes, there will be times that we'll be frustrated with another (or even your own) and there will be times that we may disagree with a course of action. Even so, we must commit to professionalism in our words and deeds.

In the end, we prohibit our own success if we ignore these critical themes.

Last week, I sent survey results from AFSA that indicates majority satisfaction. Imagine how much better we could be when we adopt the ACT Framework into our practices.
