Mrs. Strawhorne's Class News

September 1, 2015

We have had an awesome start to fourth grade! I've really enjoyed getting to know the students. They are a great group! We've had fun working as scientists and engineers. Check out our latest challenge - to build the tallest tower using 20 spaghetti noodles, 1 yard of yarn, 8 inches of tape, a 1 large marshmallow!

What's Buzzing in our Classroom?

Reading: We are reading a book called Poppy, by Avi. It's about a deer mouse who loses her boyfriend to an evil owl called Mr. Ocax. She must embark on a journey that leads her through many adventures as she works to save her family.

Writing: Our first unit is wring realistic fiction stories. We are gathering ideas for our stories and learning how to choose characters.

Word Study: Our first list will be high frequency words. Students will be using spelling to practice their words and take their test. They have a note that explains how to get to their list.

Math: We are working on place value of whole numbers. Our chapter test will be Wednesday. Our next chapter will be addition and subtraction of whole numbers.

Science: We have been working on the engineering design process to solve problems. We are also doing a mini-inquiry on owls.
