School Nutrition News
Dear NSSD Families,
We have some important information for you regarding our summer meal service as well as news for next year. First off, we'd like to introduce our new Director, John Barnes (see bio below). Previously, we had been sharing our director, Chris Facha, with Cascade School District but the job is too big for one person. Chris has decided to work full-time at Cascade which led us to find John. We are excited for both of them to start their new respective adventures!
Now on to the news. We've adjusted the summer meal service time at Stayton Elementary to 11:15-11:45 from 11:30-12:00. As a reminder, all summer meals must be consumed on site and anyone requesting a meal must be present.
Secondly, there are some important changes coming for food service in the 2022-23 school year. Unlike last year, school meals will no longer automatically be free for everyone, however, three of six schools do qualify moving forward.
All students attending Stayton Elementary (SES), Stayton Intermediate/Middle (SIS/SMS) or Mari-Linn (ML) Schools have automatically been approved to eat one breakfast and lunch meal per day at no charge through the Community Eligibility Provision. There is no paperwork needed! Should a student wish to eat an additional meal or purchase supplemental items, they will need to pay for those with cash or funds that have been deposited into their lunch accounts.
Unfortunately, Stayton High (SHS), Options Academy (OA) or Sublimity (SUB) Schools do not meet the requirements for whole-building qualification. Families may still apply for free or reduced meals on an individual basis as they have in the past. The income eligibility guidelines were expanded on July 1, 2022 so those who have not qualified in the past are encouraged to apply. It is important to note that meal charges will start being assessed on the 1st day of school, so it is critical that families apply before Aug. 30, 2022.
If you have a student(s) at a qualifying school (SES, SIS/SMS or ML) and a student(s) at a non-qualifying school (SHS, OA or SUB), you will need to either deposit funds into a meal account or complete an application for your household to determine eligibility for free/reduced meals for those who are attending SHS or SUB.
