Wolf Creek Weekly
Building Pathways To Success
From The Principal's Desk March 24, 2019
Greetings!
Thanks for another great week! We are looking forward to an exciting week! Thanks for your support.
We celebrated with highlighting our Student Leaders through our Leader In Me initiative. Students took several Georgia school leaders on a tour of our great school. They highlighted our school data, student growth, and our Leader In Me activities. They were absolutely awesome! Many of our visitors lifted great ideas to implement at their schools all across the state! If you have not seen the LEADER transformation efforts, stop by and see us! We know this program will grow LEADERS in and outside the walls of Wolf Creek! Our 7 Habits of Effective People are great for all of us! If we continue to instill these habits in our children now, they will be well-rounded individuals and do GREAT things!
We also celebrated our very own Music teacher, Mr. Casey Hall, as he was recognized as the South Learning Community Teacher of The Year! He's off to complete on the county level! You ROCK Mr. Hall!
We didn't stop there, Wolf Creek was recognized at the City of South Fulton Government meeting with a City Proclamation! They recognized our academic growth from 2016-17 to 2017-18! We increased our CCRPI score by 13.6 percent! Our students ROCK! We are extremely thankful and excited about our special visit from The City of South Fulton's Mayor, Bill Edwards, on Friday, March 29th, to speak to students for Career Day!
And finally, we ended our week with highlighting our talented students, staff and parents. If you missed our first annual Talent show, you missed a treat! We've Got Talent at WCES! Thanks ICBW sponsors, Mr. Broughton, Dr. Patmon and ICBW students for such an inspiring event. You ROCk!
I know it's busy at Wolf Creek but we do it for the children! Every opportunity to showcase their greatness is a WIN! Thanks for your support parents and staff!
It only gets busier as we end the school year, so check out our school webpage and weekly newsletters for more information on the great things happening at Wolf Creek ES.
Please check the school website often. We update the site regularly. The school calendar, handbooks, PTA and SGC information can be found there.
Thanks for all you do! Let's Go Wolves!

Growing a Reader
- Research shows that parent and family involvement is a key ingredient that contributes to students’ success in education in general (Henderson 1988) and reading in particular (Postlethwaite & Ross 1992).
- Research also shows that students who read the most, at least 20 minutes per day do best in school. Allow your child to go to bed 15 minutes later if he/she reads. Doesn’t feel like reading? No problem, bedtime is at the regular time.
- Talk to your child about all the ways reading is used in life.
- Model reading in free time to your children. Let them see that you find pleasure in reading. Talk about cool things that you’re reading or have read.
- Share a book. Side-by-side reading can be handled in many ways but is always beneficial. You read a page, your child reads a page. Read at the same time (choral type reading) pointing to the words as they are read (research by Topping in 1987 showed that both comprehension and word recognition increased remarkably when children read routinely with parents, (Opitz, M, 1998. Good-bye round robin. Portsmouth: Heinemann Publishers, p. 52.)
- When you read together, ask questions as you go (what do you think is going to happen next; this reminds me of a time when, etc.).
- Make regular visits to the library. Explore all that’s available for your free use!
- Help your child find books that are aligned to their interests. The librarians at the public and/or school library are precious jewels for this information. Ask them for books centered around your child’s interests.
- A great way to improve your child’s confidence and fluency (smoothness and speed of reading) is to practice by reading a book many times. Research backs repeated readings as a highly effective method for reading improvement. Show your child how phrasing and expression helps with meaning. Encourage your child to read to you and/or siblings.
- Record your child reading and have him/her listen to him/herself. Does it sound like mom or dad might read it? What can he/she do to improve? (Practice frequently)
- Have your child keep a reading diary, listing books as she/he complete them. Or, make a chart that can be colored in. Visuals are excellent tools for children to “see” progress. Remind your children that they become smarter as they read more.
- Talk to your children about what they are reading. Why did they like what they read?

BIRTHDAY PARTIES
While we understand the importance of birthdays, we cannot have individual birthday parties during the instructional day in the classroom. All student birthdays are recognized by the school through our morning announcements, birthday ribbons and/or tokens. In order to maximize instructional time and to minimize interruptions, your child can be recognized for his/her birthday during his/her lunch period only. One small treat such as pre-wrapped, store bought cupcakes or ice cream cups is acceptable. Please refrain from bringing food, party favors, balloons, large cakes, etc. Parents may contact your child's teacher to make arrangements for a small lunch treat.
CAFETERIA
The school cafeteria offers several choices of nutritional, well-balanced meals each day. In addition to the regular hot food lines, salads are available. Breakfast is served from 7:10 a.m. until 7:35 a.m. each school day.
Student cost for breakfast is: $1.05
Student cost for lunch is: $2.45
Adult cost for breakfast is: $1.55
Adult cost for lunch is: $3.45
Weekly purchases may be prepaid on Monday mornings or purchased on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to pre-pay for the week rather than on a daily basis. Students are not permitted to charge lunches more than three times. A student may charge again when the three charges are paid in full. ALL students must complete a new application within the first 30 days of school. Failure to so will result in irreversible charges to the student account.
Parents may sign up for online lunch payments at Visit www.MyPaymentsPlus.com
More information regarding Fulton County Schools’ Nutrition program can be found at: http://www.fultonschools.org/en/divisions/ops/Nutrition/Pages/default.aspx
You are welcome to join your child for lunch in the cafeteria at his/her scheduled lunch time. A visitor’s pass from the main office is required. If you would like to purchase a school lunch, the cost is $3.45 for adults. You may bring your child a lunch of your choosing. Outside restaurant packaging is not allowed in the cafeteria but you may choose to place items in a different container or have lunch in another designated area with your child. Due to the safety of all students and to avoid any allergic reactions, parents/guests may not bring or share any snacks or food items of any kind with other students.
Thanks for your support!
Our School Day Start/End Times
Thanks in advance for your support in ensuring that our students get to school each day on time and ready for instruction. Breakfast begins at 7:10 a.m. and ends at 7:35 a.m. daily so that we can ensure that students are in class on time to begin their instructional day. School instructional hours are from 7:40 a.m. —2:20 p.m. each day. Parents are asked to escort their children inside and sign them in if they are tardy. Help us protect the instructional day. Please limit early dismissal/check-outs. If needed, please do so before 2:00 PM. Remember keep your child’s pick up and emergency contacts updated and to sign in during each visit. ID is required for anyone visiting or checking your child our of school.
