Jasper High School
Weekly News 7/8/22
Mr. Mauck's Musings
I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and a better 4th of July weekend. I wanted to check in with everyone as we are about a month away from the start of the 2022-2023 school year. This year's seniors will be the 125th class to graduate from the Jasper school system. That is something to celebrate. The Football team will be hosting the Indianapolis Colt's Blood Drive on Tuesday. Please see the link below to register for a time.
Online registration for GJCS schools will open on July 25th. Please complete all sections and make sure your address, phone number, and email are accurate. If you have changed addresses you will need to provide proof of residency. To start the year we will host an open house for all Freshmen attending JHS next year on August 3rd at 6 pm. We will have schedules ready for distribution and students may walk their schedules and get familiar with their lockers. I would encourage all parents to join our PTO. The PTO provides JHS students with post-prom and other activities. We will provide details for payment of dues as students return to school. The remainder of this letter will highlight some key policies and useful information for parents and students.
The school is open from 7:15 until 3:45. Students are not to arrive before 7:15 and need to be picked up before 3:45. We encourage all students to participate in extra-curricular activities which would extend their school day. Students should always be supervised during these activities. Please see the section below on parent/driver drop-off and pick-up as our procedure has changed just a little. The main entrance is for bus traffic and drop-off only. Parents picking up students after school should park in a parking space in the East parking lot by the tennis facilities and wait for their students to walk out to them. Parents are not permitted to park along any sidewalks. Students driving to school will need to purchase a parking pass. Passes are $25 for the year or $15 for a semester. We are changing the location for students to congregate before the 7:50 bell. Students that arrive before 7:50 will need to wait in the Cafeteria or the Main Atrium. Students will not be permitted in the academic area before 7:50 am. This is a change and it will be unpopular, but we feel it is necessary for student safety. I am also instructing teachers to prohibit nonacademic cell phone usage during class. Students will place their phones in a caddy or designated place during instruction each day. I am emphasizing this policy to maximize instruction and reduce discipline issues. I would also like to remind students and parents it is prohibited to take video recordings of anyone without permission during school events. Taking a video may result in a 3-day suspension and would constitute a code of conduct violation for athletes. If your students must bring their phones to school, encourage them to use them properly.
Attendance at school is essential for academic success. If a student must miss school please notify the school before 10 am. We have three codes for absences to school, excused, unexcused with credit, and unexcused. An excused absence is for things like illness, and professional appointments. Students that have over 10 excused absences in a semester may not earn credit for the semester. Students that will miss school for other reasons need to fill out a pre-arranged absence form and get approval for the absence to be excused. A student that does not come to school and does not have a parent call or note will be considered unexcused. Please have your student to school and on time. Most classrooms have the expectation of students being in the class when the bell rings. Students that are tardy to school or class for more than ten minutes will be coded as unexcused and will face more severe discipline.
Vaping/e-cigarette usage and THC devices have become extremely popular with young people. These devices are horrific for one's health and lead to problems including addiction, anxiety, digestive problems, and seizures. They are illegal for anyone under the age of 21 and should not be on school property. Proper attire and dress is an essential skill for employment and should be practiced at school. Students should not have exposed skin from the waistline to approaching the knee, including holes in jeans. Shirts should cover the midriff at all times. Students are not permitted to wear hats or hoods at any time for safety concerns. Costumes are not permitted except for certain dress-up days. JHS will host several spirit days where students are encouraged to dress for a particular theme. A good rule of thumb would be if you would not wear it to work you should not wear it to school. We encourage students to express themselves but there are a few rules to allow the school to function smoothly.
The Federal and State governments have provided free lunches for students last year. That program has ended and families will be responsible for the cost of lunch. The cost of breakfast will be 1.50 and lunches will be 2.75. Parents can deposit money via My School Bucks or send money with their students. Students can turn in lunch money in the morning in the cafeteria or the office. Please fill out a free and reduced lunch form each year to apply for reduced lunches and book rental. Many families do not understand they must apply each year. The school does not allow students to order food or bring carryout food into the building. Of course, students may bring their lunch from home.
Jasper High School strives to provide an excellent education for our students. To augment that education we encourage students to engage in activities outside of the normal school day. We have a list of clubs and activities that will meet almost any interest. We have varsity sports, a state-level band, theater, student council, and a myriad of clubs. Encourage your student to get involved with a group and develop their talents. Being involved in activities accentuates their high school experience.
Save the Date, our guidance department will have a Parent Information Night on August 24th. Mr. Jochum and Mr. Uebelhor will provide parents with essential information about graduation pathways, classes, and special dates for scholarships and college applications. More information about the evening will be shared.
On Tuesday, JHS students received their AP scores. Most of our AP classes outpaced the global pass average by 10-15%. We blew the doors off most of the State of Indiana pass rates. Those scores are a tribute to the hard work of your students and the guidance of our teachers. Congratulations to all those hardworking high school students earning college credits.
Finally, I want to express my excitement for the coming school year. Our maintenance and custodial staff are working hard to get the building in tip-top shape. In the next month, our teachers will be preparing lessons and fine-tuning curricula. We are looking forward to welcoming your students to JHS for another fantastic year.
Have a great rest of your summer,
Mr. Mauck
