KCS AVID School Highlights: Karns High School
When my students complete a project or a significant assignment, we often pair up or work in groups so that they can provide each other with feedback.
Since students are often uncomfortable offering worthwhile feedback, I create note cards with questions that relate to the project or assignment. Each group places the stack of cards in the center of the table. A group member picks up a card and reads the question about the project to another group member. The person that is being asked the question responds by pointing out specific information about the project. This step helps students to become familiar with each other’s projects.
Next, each group is given an additional set of cards where students provide feedback to the person who completed a project. These questions might focus on subjects like
-what was effective
-suggestions
- what else would you include
-what would you eliminate
This feedback technique ensures that every student participates and creates more of a game-like feel to a peer review.

Professional Development Updates
- AVID Elective Teacher PLC September 26 8:00-11:15 (SSDPC): All AVID elective teachers were invited to our half day PLC to collaborate, plan, and learn from one another. The focus was implementation of the tutorial process, while they looked at resources the county has to provide as well as what is provided through AVID resources.
- KCS AVID PD Day November 13 at Northwest Middle School: AVID professional learning is provided in the Fall and Spring to help schools increase their percentage of "AVID trained staff". Participants will learn multiple AVID strategies throughout the day as well as get to see "AVID in action" at NMS by visiting some classes throughout the day.
- KCS AVID PD Team Schedule: This will be finalized after fall break. Schools will get a description of each session and a schedule of when and where these after school professional developments will take place. All will be entered in MLP for staff to attend for inservice hours.
