Field Flash
March 29, 2021
Dear Field Parents and Guardians,
As we begin our spring break, I am sharing pertinent information for the week of March 29th. I will plan to re-send this Field Flash on the afternoon of March 28th, so that it's also fresh in your inbox for planning purposes. Before we dive in, I want to wish you all a relaxing week - whether you are staying close to home or travelling, I hope this week might bring a bit of rest and reset for you and your family.
For our fully remote students, if you did not come to Field to have your picture taken in February and you'd like to submit a picture to be included in the yearbook, please take a moment to review these directions and submit your child(ren)'s photograph. We will offer a school picture re-take day for any families who missed our first picture day, or would like their child to re-take their picture. This picture re-take day will be on April 14th.
- Please take a picture of your child against a plain white background.
- Please take a "headshot" (collarbone, neck, face/head).
- Please email the picture to cgoodman@d64.org
- Important: subject line needs to include first and last name of child, grade level, and teacher's name.
- Please send the picture by April 16th
Speaking of pictures, if your child had his or her picture taken in February and you'd like a picture retake, please hang on to the pictures and know that we'll have a picture retake day on April 14th. If your child wants a retake, on that day, you'll bring the pictures with you. Here is the order information if April 14th will be your child's first picture day. More information to come on the times for the retake day and a process for remote students to sign up for a time.
Again, we hope that you enjoy your spring break, and we look forward to seeing your children - both virtually and in-person - on March 29th!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Courtney Goodman
Principal
Park Ridge-Niles School District 64’s mission is as follows:
Inspire every child to discover, learn, achieve, and care.
In-Person Learning New Information & Reminders
- Our 3 Ws: wear a mask, watch your distance, and wash your hands.
- Please have children wear a mask and bring an extra in their backpack.
- Please review arrival and dismissal information below.
- Please be sure students bring their school device (ipad or chromebook) with them to school FULLY CHARGED.
- Students should wear their lanyards each day to signal their health has been verified by an adult. New in-person students will receive their lanyards on their first day of in-person attendance.
New information:
- Please review the lunch information below!
- You should have received your bus assignment information. If for any reason, your child is not taking the bus on a certain day, please contact Ruth or Jillian in the main office. We take attendance prior to loading the busses, so knowing who is not riding daily helps with this!
- First graders who attend in-person will leave their iPads at school, rather then traveling with it to and from school each day.
- Other school supplies and items can be left at school (in desks or lockers) - your child(ren)'s teachers will share that information with you. We hope these changes will lighten the load!
- Attendance reminder: As Dr. Olson shared, it will be important to attend in-person if that's what you've selected. If you are planning to quarantine due to travel and haven't already notified us, please do so as soon as possible. If your child is ill, please do continue to have them remain home and call the office. We'll help guide you through the next steps, including access to remote instruction when necessary.
Important Lunch Changes
- In order to maintain 6 feet distance at lunch, we've reorganized our lunch and recess program a bit.
- All homerooms will be divided into two groups - group 1 will eat first and then have recess; group 2 will have recess first and then eat.
- All first graders and fourth graders will eat in their classrooms (in two smaller groups).
- Most third graders will eat in their classrooms (see note below about Lehr and Balogi).
- All second and fifth graders will eat in our larger spaces (north and south gyms, MPR).
- In addition, Mrs. Lehr and Mrs. Balogi's third grade classes will eat in the MPR.
- These students will eat "picnic style" by bringing a towel with them (we suggest in a labeled bag) to spread out on the floor. Students will be spaced 6 feet apart, which is why tables won't be used. The towel can remain at school, unless there is a spill or mess.
Arrival and Dismissal Information
A few key notes:
- Masks are required while on school grounds during arrival and dismissal.
- Please do leave your furry family members at home for the safety of all.
- If you are using the "kiss and go" areas, please be sure your child can move quickly in and out of your car. As we welcome back 89% of our students, we anticipate these drop-off areas will be busy places. Please pull to the curb, drop off your child(ren), and plan to pull away. Waiting at the curb to watch your child in line causes traffic congestion. Thank you!
Student Expectations Reminders
We'd also like to share this new resource, created by our school social worker Genny Chesney. The stories may be especially helpful for our younger students.
Health Reminders from our District Nurse
In addition, here is a direct link to the updated Travel Guidance information, previously shared in Dr. Olson's email on Monday.
Thank you!

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) - for students in grades 3-5 - Parents can help their child get ready
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness Test, an assessment for all students in Illinois, will be administered in District 64 from April 13-23.
The best preparation for the IAR is classroom instruction provided during the school year. There are also additional things you can also do to promote your child’s success:
Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.
Provide your child with words of encouragement. While we don’t want our students to feel anxious about any assessment, we do want them to do their best.
Please make sure your child remembers to bring earbuds to school.
The IAR is an online assessment and students will be using their Chromebooks and earbuds to complete these tests. Please make sure your child brings his or her Chromebook to school fully charged.
If you would like to learn more about the IAR tests, sample tests are available for your review. Thank you for your support in helping your child be prepared for upcoming testing.

A message about Music with Mrs. Kapustka
We wanted to share with you that Mrs. Jenny Kapustka will begin her maternity leave the week of March 22nd, and remain on leave through the end of this school year.
We are pleased to share that Ms. Anita Haapapuro will serve as the maternity leave substitute. Ms. Haapapuro has an extensive background in music education having been an elementary music teacher for over 9 years, as well as serving as a choir director. This past fall, Ms. Haapapuro recently completed a similar leave position at another D64 elementary school. We are so pleased to welcome Ms. Haapapuro to Field.
Beginning March 29th, she can be reached via email at ahaapapuro@d64.org. Mrs. Kapustka and Ms. Haapapuro will have an opportunity to connect prior to spring break for transition, as well.
Thank you for joining me in wishing Mrs. Kapustka well as she enjoys this time with her family, and welcoming Ms. Haapapuro to our Field community.
