The Principal's Desk At Sycamore ES

No School for Students- Monday, October 12th

Principal's Desk: Week Ending 10/9/15

Parents,

A huge thank you to all that were able to attend our Annual Fall Festival on Friday evening. I can't thank the PTA enough for all that they did to contribute to our school community. It was a wonderful feeling to see all the new attractions, rides and activities added to the event. Thank you to our awesome parent and PTA Vice-President, Erin Smith, who was the driving force in it being an even greater event this year! Way to go to our PTA board members including Heather, Erin, Amber, Whitney and Chelsea for going over and beyond! Your attention to detail is appreciated!

This Friday, October 9th was the last day of our 1st 9 weeks. Teachers will finalize grades on Monday and continue to get ready for our Awards Ceremony in November. Look out for information and an invitation for the date and time of your child's ceremony. Students will receive recognition for Principal's list, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Most Improved in Reading, Math & Writing and Top Husky for positive discipline.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has a wonderful program to promote 4 Healthy Habits in children. The 4 Healthy Habits are to: Drink More Water, eat fruits and vegetables, limit screen time and become more active. We hope that you will support these healthy habits at home as well as we do at school! Students and staff will receive a water bottle and a t-shirt to be reminded of leading healthier lives every day.

Two of their representatives launched the program on Friday at our school by having an enjoyable pep rally. ALL of our students were seated comfortably in the gym to enjoy the festivities. We will continue to inform you of upcoming events related to this as the school year goes on. If you are interested in hearing more about this FREE program that our students will benefit from, feel free to head over to the website: http://www.strong4life.com/.

Lunch Charges for Full Paying Students:

Please note a change to our lunch program beginning on Monday, October 3rd. Students who have a balance of more than $5.00 will be offered a cheese sandwich as opposed to peanut butter and jelly. All students are offered breakfast and if you would like your child to eat breakfast at home only, please let your child know to not get breakfast at school and also send a note. Additionally, we are faced with an absorbent amount of balances of unpaid lunch fees. Please take care of your child's balance on www.mealpay.com, or send a check to school with your child. This $0 balance will allow for your child to eat a full lunch. If you need assistance, please don't hesitate to call our cafeteria for support.

Front Desk:

After conferring with the front desk attendant or signing out your child, please step away to the seating area so that school business may proceed. It has become difficult for the front desk attendants to handle confidential phone business and other work related activities. Your cooperation is appreciated!

Cafeteria Visitation:

All Cafeteria passes are only for admission to the Cafeteria. Please allow all students to walk to and from their classrooms without an escort. If you would like to visit the classroom, you will have to come to the front office, receive entrance/permission and retrieve a visitor's pass. If you are unclear, please give your grade level AP a call. Thank you for helping us to improved in this area.

Attendance:

Research shows that there is a direct connection between positive attendance and student achievement. We are initiating a new "Paws for Attendance Program," that will be led by our great counselor, Ms. Moody. At the end of every month, we take data on which students and grade levels are in school every day. For the month of August, our 5th graders had the highest percentage of perfect attendance and 484 students out of 750 were at school every day! Stay tuned for our September data!

Lost and Found:

As the weather begins to get cooler, we know that children will begin to bring coats, scarves and gloves to school at a higher rate. If you could write their name and/or initials in their items, it will aid in us being able to return these items to them. Every year, we give away beautiful items to charities and though this is important, we know that you would want your child to have their items. Thank you for helping us with this.

Reading...Reading...Reading!

We have students on every grade level who need support in the area of reading. It is important that we build our student's capacity to be readers, writers and mathematicians. The more frequently students read, the better they will perform in all subjects. Continue to hold this as a value in your home as we work to build their stamina, interest and comprehension in reading at school! Make reading goals with your children like Ms. Wilkerson made with her students in class. (Picture above)

Thank you to all of my parents who are supportive and are cheerleaders for our school. Your willingness to speak well of our staff, families and communities means more than you know. WE ARE LANIER...WE ARE SYCAMORE!

Have a great weekend!
