SCHOOLWIDE BUCKET FILLING
HOMESTEAD HEROES
Dear Homestead Parents,
Welcome to our first Homestead Newsletter highlighting all that our children, staff, and parents do to celebrate kindness, differences, and service to others. Thank you for all of your help and support in making Homestead the respected and respectful community it is.
Sincerely,
Dr. Suzanne Viscovich
Principal
Bucket Filler Read Aloud Every September, as principal, I read one of Carol McLoud's books on How to Be a Bucket Filler to each class. Through the read aloud, our children learn the importance of being a bucket filler to one other all day long, all year long. | Class Bucket Filler Books As a follow-up to the principal's Read Aloud, each class writes a class book of real-life examples of how to be a bucket filler. Each child's unique idea is then read on the morning announcements throughout the school year, reinforcing this concept daily. | Arts in Ed Assembly Through an Arts in Ed Assembly, The Boy Who Would Be Captain Hook, the children learned to appreciate differences. In their words, "Always include others." "If someone is sad you can give them a hug." The presenter emphasize that even if you are different, love yourself just they way you are; we are all unique and special. |

Unity Day To celebrate Unity Day, our Primary School Social Worker, Mrs. Tracey Martinez, read The Crayon Box to every class. Through this read aloud, the children continued to learn to appreciate differences, to be kind, and even learned how to be an upstander! | Halloween Candy Drive Homestead students learned about service to others by giving up some of their own Halloween candy. This candy was donated through the help of the PTA along with Stratford School to needy families at The Inn. | Coat Drive Homestead Families so generously donated new/used coats to families in need at Blanca's House. Students again learned to give to those less fortunate. |

First-grade Thanks-giving Service Learning Project First-grade students did their own service learning project in lieu of a feast. The children did chores around the house to earn money at home to put toward materials for crafts. Together with their teachers and class parents, they made crafts for ill children at Cohen's Children's Hospital. Our first graders learned how they can be of service to other children. | Platt-deutsche Retirement Home Visit Every December and May, we make a visit to the elderly residents of the Plattdeutsche Retirement Home. The students sing their concert songs and bring smiles to the residents. Our buckets are filled by seeing their smiles, and theirs are filled by our students songs and smiles. The children learn to spread kindness in this season of giving! | Toys for Tots Drive Every year, Homestead faculty and families overflow with generosity to children in need during the holiday season by donating toys to them. The children learn that they can make a difference in filling the buckets of less fortunate children. |
