Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,

We have just finished up the Second Trimester and Spring is right around the corner(remember to turn your clocks forward on March 13th!). Parent Teacher conference week will be Monday, March 14- Friday, March 18th with Early Dismissal days at 1:25 all week(TK at 12:45). Please make note/remember the earlier pick up time at 1:25 PM for transportation purposes and so your child does not have to wait a long time for pick up. For this round of conferences, not everyone will have a conference. Teachers will only schedule conferences if they want to meet with a parent for a specific reason(s) or the parent requests a conference. We will be sending the 2nd Trimester Progress Reports/Report Cards home in the mail on Friday, March 11th. Below are some Information Sheets by Grade Level for parents/families to help at home for Math and Language Arts.

The other big news was the State’s announcement of a shift in its policy on masks in schools. As of Monday, March 14, 2022, Redwood City School District (RCSD) will move from “requiring” masks for students and employees in RCSD schools to “strongly recommending” that masks be worn in school settings. Governor Newsom announced last week California’s change to the mask mandate in schools. The Redwood City School District (RCSD) Board of Trustees is scheduled to discuss California’s upcoming change about masks. The RCSD Board of Trustees mask discussion is scheduled for its next public meeting, which will be held Wednesday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m.

In updating its masking guidance for schools, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will remove the requirement of masks for students in schools and child care facilities after this Friday, March 11, 2022. As of March 14, masks will remain strongly recommended, but not required at all California schools. On March 12, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) will strongly recommend that masks be worn indoors in schools. San Mateo County Health announced that it is aligned with CDPH on this recommendation. Until March 11, masks will be required indoors in schools.

CDPH shared that it is now looking at masking along a continuum: required, strongly recommended, recommended, and optional. As conditions improve, CDPH will continue to ease its guidance around masks. Similarly, if we experience another spike, CDPH may tighten up its guidance.

Schools in San Mateo County have followed CDPH and SMC Health guidance throughout the pandemic with good results. Because of the safety measures they put in place, schools have stayed open to in-person learning throughout the school year, even during surges. Masks have been part of that success. According to CDPH, “throughout this pandemic, the masking requirement in California schools has allowed us to keep schools open when compared to other parts of the country.”

Groups Counseling with Vickie Neves

This year we are fortunate to have a wonderful new counseling program led by our school counselor Vickie Neves. Vickie is a long time Kindergarten teacher who finished her Masters in counseling with her PPS credential. This year she has moved quickly to establish a number of groups to support students with a wide variety of issues. These groups are: the "Worry Warriors" who work on coping skills to manage stress and anxiety; the "Banana Spilts" who are dealing with separation and/or divorce; the "Goal Climbers" who are working on motivation and setting improvement goals; the "Rainbow Friends" who work on developing friendship skills; the "Self-Control Surfers" who develop strategies for controlling impulsive behavior; the "Healing Hearts" who need help coping with a loss or death of a friend or family member; the "Girl Empowerment" group who work on self esteem; and the "Boys Self Esteem" group who are working on self esteem.

i-Ready Testing for 3-5th Graders March 8-March 15th

Our 3-5th grade students will take the i-Ready Language Arts test March 8-11th, and the i-Ready Math test on March 15-18th. Parents, please make sure your child is at school on time and has a good night's sleep and breakfast.

What is i-Ready again?? i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction.

The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.

i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are interactive and provide strategic supports to keep your child engaged as they learn.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep, and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
  • Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will get only about half of the questions correct.
  • Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.

To support your child’s learning i-Ready at home, you can:

  • Discuss your child’s progress on their i-Ready lessons.
  • Celebrate your child’s learning and growth.
  • Encourage them to use i-Ready at home.

Tutoring/Homework Help - Grades 3-5

Adelante Selby 3-5th grade parents, Tutor.com is now available for students who would like or benefit from access to online homework help when they are working at home.

Students can access the help by clicking on the "Waffle" menu on their Chrome browser on their Chromebook from school. They will scroll down and click on the Tutor.com icon. (Note that they need to be signed in to Chrome using their RCSD accounts.) We are also working on having a link in Clever accessible in the future.

Once students are logged in, they can follow the steps in this video to sign up for help. Following these steps will help them get a tutor who has knowledge in the particular area they need.

Tutor.com has also provided these resources that we can share with families.

Student Absence Reporting Form

In order to facilitate communication with the school and save time when your child is absent for any reason, we want all families to use the Student Absence Reporting Form in lieu of calling the office. You will notice the form does not have a place to enter the date and that is because it has a time stamp when it is completed. Our Office Staff can more efficiently go through the form and excuse absences in our Powerschool system. If there are any questions, particularly around Covid cases, we will call you directly for more information.

Optional Weekly COVID-19 Testing Available at our School Site Tuesdays and Thursdays:

The school district has contracted with Bay PLS to help out with Redwood City School District students/staff COVID-19 Antigen Rapid testing at ALL school sites. We have testing available here at Adelante Selby for our students and staff on Tuesdays: 1:30-4:30pm or Thursdays 10:15-12:15. The School District will send out a Google Survey to parents who have registered with Primary Health every Friday afternoon to give consent for their child(ren) to be tested the following week (we will get the students from class or REACH/YMCA for testing). We will only test students if the District Appointment Google form is filled out on Fridays. In addition, testing continues to be available districtwide on Thursdays from 1:30-4:15pm at Hoover and Kennedy schools. Please complete the Primary Health registration form so that your child may be tested(this only needs to be completed once):
