8th Grade Students Travel to the Nation’s Capital
Last week, the 8th grade class at Marine City Middle School embarked on the school trip of a lifetime with a multi-day visit to Gettysburg, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia. A group of 160 students, parents, and staff members left on Wednesday night and returned to Marine City early Sunday morning.
On the trip students were immersed in the history of our nation, with a battlefield tour in Gettysburg, site visits in Washington D.C. including Ford’s Theatre, the Smithsonian museums, the war memorials, and the individual memorials of Lincoln, Jefferson, and Martin Luther King Jr. While in the D.C. area, students were also humbled by the National Cemetery in Arlington, where we were privileged to take part in the wreath ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We even worked in some time for a pizza buffet and karaoke before departing for Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, our group visited the Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall before embarking on a guided tour through the historical streets of Philly to visit the homes and workplaces of Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross. After grabbing some cheesesteaks (most of us for dinner), we concluded our trip with a running of the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, more commonly referred to as “The Rocky Steps”.
There are many wonderful things about the Marine City Middle School 8th grade trip. One such thing is the amount of participation that we have and the total number of people who attend. This year, 70% of our 8th grade went on the trip. According to our tour director that is one of the highest percentages in the state, with the average being a 33% participation rate for schools that use Student Adventures in Michigan. With such a large percentage attending and the fact that we go very early in the school year, our students are provided real-life connections to the material that they will learn about in social studies in both the 8th and 9th grades.
MCMS Staff Spotlight
This week we feature Mr. Andy Scheel, the exemplary school counselor at Marine City Middle. Mr. Scheel has been with the East China School District for 8 years, having served both the St. Clair and Marine City Communities through his work at St. Clair High, Marine City High, and Marine City Middle schools. Mr. Scheel is also a member of the esteemed coaching staff of the Marine City Varsity Football team. Before coming to us as a school counselor Mr. Scheel was a classroom teacher and coach at Clintondale High School, where he taught Social Studies for 13 years. Mr. Scheel is a proud graduate of Marine City High School that has returned home in service to his community. At Marine City Middle, Mr. Scheel is a jack-of-all-trades, specializing in the interpersonal relationships that exist between students, setting students up for academic and future success, and supporting the social and emotional development and growth of our young Mariners. In his time at MCMS, Mr. Scheel has created and sponsored the organizational intervention we call the Harpoon Club, designed to develop the skill set of students in order to build confidence in their academic lives through structure, personal monitoring, and parental communication. Mr. Scheel dedicates himself daily in the service of each and every student at Marine City Middle School. When he isn’t roaming the halls of MCMS and interacting with the student body, Mr. Scheel enjoys spending time with his wife Lisa and their two amazing children, David and Nadia. He is an avid sports fan and the co-host of the “Sports Peninsula Podcast” that speaks to all things sports in the State of Michigan. Marine City Middle School is a better place because of the dedication and caring person that is Mr. Andy Scheel.

Teaching Healthy Habits
Teach Kids Healthy Habits
Healthy kids are more likely to become healthy adults. Be a role model and help your kids make safe and healthy choices every day.
- Buckle up every age, every seat, every trip.
- Put on a helmet during outdoor activities, including riding bikes and skating.
- Put on sunscreen and avoid indoor tanning.
- Brush and floss teeth with fluoride to help prevent tooth decay.
- Wash hands with clear running water and apply soap. Rub hands for at least 20 seconds, then rinse.
- Get a flu vaccine. Everyone needs a flu vaccine – every flu season.
- Be active with your kids. Children and adolescents need a total of 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
- Be smoke-free, and protect your children from second hand smoke.
- Be a healthy role model. Show your child what it means to be healthy.
