Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
August 17, 2018
A Great Week!
It was such a fun week in Room 9. We spent the week getting to know each other and building our classroom community. We are quickly becoming a family and I could not be more proud of my "kids."
Let me know if you would like to sign up to receive REMIND texts. This is the quickest and easiest way to get important information to you quickly. Several of you have already signed up and have received texts from me. Also, I love to post pictures of my class on Twitter. Feel free to follow our class using @MrsGreene4.
Scholastic Book orders are due Wednesday, August 22. It is fun for me to see the kids' faces when they walk into the classroom in the morning and see the Scholastic order has arrived!
I will have a lot of helpful information at Meet the Teacher Night on August 28. Hope to see all of you there!
I absolutely ADORE your children already! I can tell I am in for an AMAZING year!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Here is What is Planned for Next Week: August 20-24
We will take the Math NWEA Test Wednesday, August 22 and Thursday, August 23. We will take the test using Chrome books in our classroom. This is different from past years in that we usually tested in the computer lab. I think the change will benefit the students - more relaxing and familiar environment for them. If you have any questions about this test, feel free to email me. We use the Math test data to determine whether students should be placed in a higher level math class. I believe the score to be placed in advanced math is 97%. You will be notified if your child has met this criteria. Also, I will make a copy of your child's test scores and place it in his/her data binder. We (students and me) analyze their data to create quarterly and yearly goals. Stay tuned for more information...
Reading:
Next week we will spend time building reading stamina, choosing "just right" books, taking assessments to help me determine where your child's reading level is, participating in reading engagement lessons, and understanding routines and procedures for Reading Workshop. I am trying to get to know your child's reading habits, level, and engagement. This helps me know where to start and to create a plan to move him/her forward this year.
Writing: Personal Narrative
We will begin learning how to write a personal narrative. The structure of writing instruction is as follows:
- Teacher teaches a mini-lesson (whole group)
- Writing Workshop (students working on a specific skill or working on rough draft of a piece that will eventually be published). During Workshop time, Mrs. Greene is meeting with students to help with specific skills.
Social Studies: Understanding the Geography of the World
- Learning about hemispheres, continents, and countries
Math: Unit 1 - Math Tools, Time, and Multiplication
We will focus on multiplication for the next month or so. Your child will learn how to model multiplication problems (using repeated addition & arrays) and will begin memorizing their multiplication facts. Each child started practicing their facts taking a timed test today on their ZERO facts. Students should spend a few minutes each night practicing for their timed test on Fridays. Please check my Math CANVAS page for resources to help you child practice online.
Next week we begin Unit 1 which focuses on number grids, multiplication, and time. Homework will come home Monday-Thursday in the Homelink book. Please make sure your child has his/her Homelink book at school each day.
Please email me with questions you may have.
