About the Workshop:
This interactive course is intended to help a variety of professionals in school settings to better understand and support children with Selective Mutism. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the clinical features of Selective Mutism, the Do's and Don'ts for relating to a child who has SM, and grow in their awareness of the basic steps for intervention. Ways to foster inclusivity and participation in the school setting will be reviewed. Safety plans will also be discussed.
Outcomes:
As a result of attending, participants will be able to:
- Name three or more common traits for SM
- Differentiate between shyness and SM
- Describe at least 3 ways to promote participation and inclusivity
- Describe at least 3 strategies for constructive interactions/communications
- Explain at least 2 ways to build awareness and understanding about SM in the classroom

About the Presenter
Annie is a licensed and American Speech and Hearing Association certified Speech-Language Pathologist. She has worked with children all across the country including West Virginia, Georgia, and South Central Los Angeles. Her particular area of clinical interest is Selective Mutism. Annie follows a “whole child” philosophy. She enjoys working closely with family members, school teams, and other service providers to create a collaborative model of support for the children and families she serves. Annie is the Selective Mutism Group State Coordinator for NH and ME. She leads a Selective Mutism Parent Support Group which is open to all families across New England who have a child with SM. Annie is passionate about her field and about helping individuals to find their voices. She feels that the ability to communicate is a beautiful gift.
