Principal Message
Welcome to February!
We will be finishing our second trimester this month as the school year continues to fly by. There is a lot going on this month.
Registration opens on February 1st for incoming Kindergarten and Transitional kindergarten students. All registration is done online, but feel free to call the front office if you need any assistance with this. Re-enrollment registration for all other grade levels opens on March 1st. If you plan to return to Washington or any other CNUSD school you must complete the re-enrollment registration. Our community assistant Mrs. Nelson will also be available to help any parents who need support with this.
We have a few holidays this month that are non-school days, Lincoln's birthday, and President's Day. February is also Black History Month and we will have a Family Night in March(unfortunately we could not secure any February dates). On March 9th Mr. Hardy Brown will be here to share the history behind several artifacts he has collected over the years... He will bring an exhibit that presents the unique artifacts collected by Jerry Gore in his effort to build historical empathy.
We will also begin ELPAC testing for all English Learners. Please see below for a message from Mr. Knapp.
This month we are starting our STEPS program. STEPS is both an early intervention and prevention program that has been nationally recognized as an exemplary model for effective school-based services for students in grades K-6. Students in the STEPS program meet with an aide in a small setting for 30 minutes per week for a set number of weeks. Topics focus on empathy building, impulse control/problem-solving skills, and emotion management.
ELPAC Testing
How to Support Your Student with ELPAC Testing
ELPAC testing will begin in the month of February. The ELPAC assesses your students’ English Language abilities and is a key piece of information when reclassifying students out of the English Learner program. Washington will be testing your students in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing beginning February 6th. Please use the links below to view resources that you can use at home to help your student prepare for the test. Testing will begin for grades 3-6 on February 6th and continue through March 2nd. Grades TK-2 will begin testing on March 6th.
The best way to help your students prepare for the assessment is to”
- Get a good night’s sleep.
- Eat a healthy breakfast.
- Take a practice test.
- Remind your child they have been working hard and will do great!
If you have any questions about the ELPAC test, please call Mr. Knapp at school or by email at dknapp@cnusd.k12.ca.us.

DADS ALL IN FUNDRAISER
MEN UNITED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Our new Dad's All-In program at Washington Elementary is exactly that! Dads and/or father figures get involved in the lives and education of their children. This exciting program will positively impact the lives of your children and help build strong bonds. They are fundraising to sponsor extracurricular activities for our students. If you have a small business or know of a business that would like to have its business logo on the DADS ALL IN banner we are accepting a generous donation of $150.00 by 2/17 (make checks payable to Washington Elementary). Please contact our Community Assistant, Mrs. Nelson for more details or questions, at 951-481-1044 or amalia.nelson@cnusd.k12.ca.us.
Capturing Kids' Hearts
This month’s Capturing Kids’ Hearts theme is Kindness – “Spark the Heart”. We want our students to understand that kindness is the ability and willingness to express care and compassion for others. Please use these resources below so that you can support and practice with your student at home.

Parking Lot Reminders
To get as many Kindergartners dismissed as possible at 1:42 pm(12:42 on Wednesday), we will be closing the lot in front of the office and new kinder building approximately an hour before dismissal and opening it at 1:00 (12:00 on Wednesday) to Kinder parents only. This will allow us to keep the pickup area clear so that all our Kinder cars can get into the lot. Once most kinder students have been picked up, the lot will be opened back up to the rest of the grade levels for pickup. This is only for the lot that parallels Parkridge Avenue. Thanks again for your patience!
Please remember to obey all traffic rules. We know we have very limited school parking, but if you need to park and there is not a spot available in our front lot, you can also use the church parking lot across the street. Please remember that there should be no parking on the horse trails across the street.
We have 2 lots open for drop-off and pick-up. We ask that you please wait in line when picking up students through the drop-off or pick-up lines, we have noticed that we have some cars that are trying to bypass the lines, so please be patient. When we obey the rules the lines do move pretty quickly. Thank you for helping keep our students safe!
ATTENDANCE POLICY
If your student is not present at school, they will be marked absent. Parents/caregivers will need to contact the office to report any absences. Tardies will also be monitored closely. If your student is not on campus by the beginning of instructional time (7:45), they will need to go through the office to get a tardy slip.
If you have any questions regarding attendance or are looking for support in this area, please contact the school and ask to speak to the Assistant Principal (Doug Knapp) or the attendance clerk (Arianna Plascencia). We will be happy to help.

Mrs. Peirce, 4th - 6th Grade Special Education Teacher
Hello, my name is Tammy McMichael-Peirce. I have a Master’s Degree in Education and this is my 7th year here at Washington Elementary School. I have taught in the Special Education Life Skills program covering grades 1 – 6. I am currently teaching grades 4, 5 & 6. Prior to Washington, I taught for 4 years with a Middle School Autism Program teaching grades 6 - 8. Teaching is a second career for me. Before I followed my dream to become a teacher, I worked for the State of California as an Investigative Analyst for CDC-Office of Civil Rights and prior to that as a Manager for CDSS-Licensing Division. When not working on all things teaching and supporting my amazing students, I enjoy spending time with family and friends horseback riding, enjoying a spa day, seeing plays / musicals, and being on the water - boating, fishing, wakeboarding and jet skiing. I look forward to another year working with all of our students as they grow together.
Crystal Garcia, RSP Teacher

Some of my hobbies include scrapbooking, playing tennis and collecting Starbucks cups.
