As you embark on your high school journey, there are several things to keep in mind over the course of your freshmen year. Take high school seriously right from the start! Your freshmen grades do matter. That means what you do in your ninth grade year has a direct impact on the opportunities available to you in your senior year. It is up to you to "hit the ground running" as you begin your high school career. Start off the school year strong by following these tips.
- Time management is crucial in high school. You’ll have more homework and more activities to balance- find ways to get organized!
- Stay on top of your homework and see your teachers for extra help. They are happy to schedule time to meet with you.
- Get to know your teachers! They want you to be successful in high school.
- Set short and long term goals. Discuss your goals with your parents and/or your counselor.
- Play a sport, join a club, and do the things you love best! Be an active participant in the SEHS community.
- Get to know your counselor. We are here to answer any questions you might have about high school and to help you reach your goals. Stop by to say hello.
What do I do if in high school my student...
Is starting to struggle academically?
-First step is to reach out to the teacher directly. They can often give you more info about the grade, a more accurate picture of how they are struggling or can work more with your student. Email is the preferred way for most teachers but check the syllabus your child receives on the first day in class!
-Contact your students counselor.
-Have them attend peer tutoring or after school math tutoring.
Is struggling socially or emotionally?
-Contact their counselor or social worker. The counselor may make a referral to other or outside resources.
Is being bullied or harassed?
-Contact their counselor or dean. While this can be a tough step it is important that you are letting the school know if you are concerned about your student.
-Encourage your student to talk to their dean or counselor.
Is absent from school?
-Contact the attendance office and excuse the absence.
-Get in touch with the teacher via e-mail in order to keep up with assignments. Many teachers use Google Classroom to help in this process.
-Do you best to keep up with work if you have missed several days.
Need help with homework?

GET INVOLVED!
Get involved in high school!!!
It is never to early to start thinking about college!
- Talk to your counselor about a 4-year plan
- Make a list of academic and personal goals. What do you want to have achieved in 1 year? 4 years?
- Start to look at colleges and become familiar with admissions criteria
- Begin to keep a log of involvement in and outside of school. Sports, jobs, clubs, volunteering...all these things will become important as you apply to colleges and scholarships
- Identify potential career options. Don't worry, they will change as time goes one, but it is important to start to think about what type of careers might fit you!
