Middle School Building Project Update
We received big news yesterday when the Massachusetts School Building Authority Board took their official vote to approve $75.8M in funding for two new middle schools in Holyoke. We are thrilled to receive such a generous and significant grant that has the potential to fundamentally transform the educational experience in Holyoke for generations of youth. We are grateful to the MSBA for their support and their commitment to the children of our city. The funding for the remainder of the project will be the subject of a debt exclusion vote on the November 5th ballot. The projects would be complete for occupancy in September 2023.
PreK and Kindergarten Scholars
We are looking forward to welcoming our youngest scholars - PreK and Kindergarten students - next week for their first day of school on September 4th. We hope that you can join us at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 3rd for PreK and Kindergarten Open House at your scholar’s school. Also, new this year, the district will have a My First School Bus Ride event. Is your HPS student taking the bus this year for the first time? Come to the "My First School Bus Ride" event taking place this Saturday, August 31st, from 11-2. Students will learn about bus safety and have a chance to sit in and explore a school bus. This event will take place at Morgan Elementary School, 596 South Bridge Street.
Tonight is the 4th annual Ready for School Pre-K and Kindergarten Parade from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Holyoke Merry-Go-Round. The parade will depart at 5:10 pm from the Merry-Go-Round and end at 5:30 pm in front of City Hall. We invite everyone to dress up as their favorite superhero to cheer on our young learners. Come with your pom-poms and musical instruments to make it festive and memorable.
Back to School Reminders
If you have specific transportation questions or concerns, please call our hotline at (413) 512-5328. The hotline will be available between now and September 6th.
If you have any back-to-school questions, feel free to reach out to your child’s school.
Please help to ensure that your child is in school on time, every day and all day unless they are too ill to come to school. It is impossible for students to reach grade level if they are not regularly in school. Once again, as a city we are asking for a commitment from all families that students strive for less than 5 days of absence this year. We will be celebrating good attendance all year long. We appreciate your support to ensure that your child is on a path for a successful school year!
Back to school forms have been sent home with students this week. Please complete the forms and return them to school by September 6th. It is critical that we have your most updated phone numbers and email addresses so that we can provide you with the most up to the minute information on what is happening in our schools (including this update!).
Summer reading/math challenge materials (https://tinyurl.com/y6h2nunk) should be returned to school by Friday, September 6th. All students who complete the challenge will be eligible to enter raffles for fabulous prizes. We were excited to see so many of our students last weekend at Celebrate Holyoke’s HPS table, where they shared the titles of their favorite books and had a chance to dunk city and district leaders who were celebrating the summer challenges by sitting in dunk tanks.
Welcome back!
