Kia ora ma whanau te kura Kotuku Lauriston,

Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute to our school Hangi within the kaupapa of celebrating Matariki which was set to go ahead this Friday, the 8th of July 2022.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast from Thursday is not going to make for ideal conditions for us to enjoy our celebrations together as a community-so we have decided to make the call now to postpone our special Matariki celebration day to the 7th-9th of September in Term 3. During these days we will prepare for the hangi as previously shared in our PDF last week, with the Hangi and Tree Planting taking place on Friday the 9th of September.

Thankfully Matariki celebrates a time period marked by the appearance of nine stars which appear in the sky for several months, so our kaupapa will still sit comfortably within the season of a new year dawning within the NZ context. We hope that the families who have previously indicated that they can donate food and time will still be able to support our celebrations in the same way next term and we will be back in contact with our teams closer to the date posted above. We also hope that many of our families who were either away, sick or unable to make it in Term 2, will be able to attend in September. We know that the dates for some events won’t work for everybody-but rest assured we aim to host many more cultural events over the coming years.

In addition to our hangi, during the third week back of Term we will hold a school powhiri to welcome any families who have joined our school since Term 4, 2021 last year. The powhiri will be followed by a workshop for families on Te Whare Pou Matauranga with Colin and Nan. The date for the powhiri and workshop is Monday the 8 of August.

With COVID cases again on the rise, an increase in Winter ills and a tummy bug all making the rounds throughout our Opuke and Hakatere communities-it is probably a blessing to postpone the Matatriki celebrations we had planned till next term. I am certain with so many children away over the past few weeks and again heading into this week-families will appreciate a holiday free from the potential sickness that could come home from school, by gathering together in great numbers on the last day of term.

On that note, the End of Term Assembly will go ahead at 1.30pm on Friday, the 8th of July as previously advertised, but this will now take place in the Lauriston Hall due to the weather anticipated that day. We ask that all Year 4+ students, staff and whanau attending please wear masks during our assembly.

If we don’t see you before the end of term, have a wonderful winter holiday together with your children-stay safe-and see you all again in Term 3.

Nga mihi nui

The Lauriston Team
