Building Resilience Through Writing
Supporting Refugee Students
Thursday, November 3, 2016
Dawn I. Florino, M.ED., Ed.D. Candidate
at the Southeastern Regional Education Service Center (SERESC)
Who Should Attend:
Reading/Writing Teachers and Reading Specialists, Classroom Teachers, ELL Coordinators,
About the Workshop:
"Can You Hear my Voice?"
In this workshop, Dawn Florino will present from her experience as an educator in a school where the population of English Language Learners (ELL’s), specifically refugees, changed in a ten year period from six to eighty three students. “I could never have imagined how much I had to learn about my practice. I could never have imagined what they would teach me about that which I thought I was already and expert”, she states.
In this experience, educators will discuss aspects of personal and language development that influence ELL students' reading and writing, specifically adolescents. During the course of the day, participants will examine the unique challenges that exist for refugee students and the ways they develop and reveal resilience through their writing. The presenter will describe a year of development of a small group of refugees and the evolution of their thinking, writing and healing.
“Traditional ‘literacy assessments’ weren't sensitive enough to reveal what I needed to know about their language skills, ” Ms. Florino notes. She will describe intentional (but not conventional) methods of assessment instruction that married her observations about the students, experience and training in psychology, understandings of teaching and learning, literacy, linguistics, and educational leadership. She describes the childrens' writing as illuminating their cultural and personal struggles, traumas, celebrations, humor and reflections as well as her own.
Outcomes:
Educators will have consciousness of the unique factors that influence refugee childrens' reading writing development.
Educators will possess instructional strategies that support the psychological aspects of children's educational experience, willingness and ability to write meaningful text.
