Principal's Message
Talofa, Kia ora, Malo e lelei, Habari, Hello, Sawadee, Kia orana, Dia duit, Ma muka chini,
Nominations are in for the Board elections. Thanks to all those who put their hand up to be nominated. It's important our community vote and make sure you get your votes in on time this week. Due 17 September.
This week we have some senior students representing us at the Wearable Arts show at St Mary's Putaruru. Our students have worked hard on their creations and should be proud that they designs are completely child designed and child made. Well done tamariki!
We also have students representing us at EPRO-8 competition and science challenges at St Mary's Rotorua (my old school!). Go Bishop Kids!
We are hoping to plant soon in our planter boxes, if you are able to help in any way for this please let us know.
Heads up next term we have a professional coach coming to train all our tamariki in swimming. Henk has led many a fine athlete on to greater things representing at national and international levels. There will be small fee for our parents for this. Bishop does try to keep our costs to parents minimal, but to ensure our students get the best opportunities ..sometimes these things come at a cost for schools.
Our school photos will be ready to view before the end of term. We will let you know when these are ready.
As New Zealand moves to a new, long-term approach to COVID-19, the positive news is that household contacts of a person with COVID-19 do not need to isolate, but instead are asked to complete a RAT test each day, for five days. Therefore, ākonga who are household contacts but test negative and do not have COVID-19 symptoms, should continue to attend. It is the best place for them to be so they can be engaged in their learning, and connected with their teachers, classmates and friends. Information on how to get RAT kits can be found here: Request a RAT– Ministry of Health
Normal public health measures remain in place, these include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene, encouraging coughing or sneezing into their elbows and, staying home and getting tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms.
We are looking for a volunteer who may like to spend some time working alongside a few of our students and helping them with baking and cooking skills. Please let us know if you know of anyone who may have time to do this a couple of hours a week.
A reminder that Our Good Shepherd Shop in town is looking for donations of good second hand goods. If you have books, bikes, toys or clothes you would like to donate please take into the shop or bring along to school and we will pass them on. If there are families in our community who are finding things tricky please do let us know. We have some options available to help our families out.
Student behaviour is generally very good at our school. Students know the rules and are ready to learn and participate. However there are from time to time a student who chooses not to follow school rules. Here at Bishop Gaines School, all students and staff have the right to be respected, and when rules and values are followed this occurs. Teachers have talked to all students on expectations and what that looks like at our school. Please have a korero with your child to refresh our school rules and expectations, thank you.
We are holding a number of fundraising initiatives this term, so keep your eye out for these. The School Cook Book has been created and order forms for this have been sent home. The cost is $10 and the proceeds are helping toward our year 7 & 8 camp.
Friday Fun this week-your child's teacher will let you know.

School Prayer
Lord our God, in your wisdom and love you surround us with the mysteries of the universe. Send your Spirit upon these students and fill them with your wisdom and blessings. Grant that they may devote themselves to their studies and draw ever closer to you, the source of all knowledge.
“Educators…do not be disheartened in the face of difficulties that the educational challenge presents. Educating is not a profession but a way of being. In order to educate it is necessary to step out of ourselves and be among young people, to accompany them in the stages of their growth and to set ourselves beside them. Give them hope and optimism for their journey in the world. Teach them to see the beauty and goodness of creation. But above all with your life be witnesses of what you communicate. Educators – teachers, parents pass on knowledge and values with their words, but their words will have an incisive effect on children and young people if they are accompanied by their witness, their consistent way of life. Without consistency it is impossible to educate”. Pope Francis
