From the Principal
Welcome back, and Happy New Year! We are hopeful and looking forward to a calm, successful, healthy and enriched 2022!
We will officially begin the second semester and third nine weeks of school on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Our staff is ready and able to tackle the second half of this school year. They are refreshed, refocused, and revitalized and everyone is already hard at work. Remember, there is no school on Friday, January 14th as it is a teacher workday, and Monday, January 17th in honor and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King. Report cards will be sent home on Monday, February 24th.
We again are experiencing an urgency in the air that is reflective of our goal to have every child recover academically and meet our high expectations and those set by the state. With students now learning only face to face after another challenging beginning of the year, attendance is again a deciding factor in student success. We accomplished so much this first semester and yet we still have so much ahead of us that will bring both excitement and challenge. Typically, the months of January, February and March are fast growth and learning months for all students and the learning during this time is very, very important. It is critical that students attend school every day, unless they are ill, as every minute of instruction is valuable, and difficult to reproduce. Much of what occurs in the classroom includes peer discussion as well as small group instruction. Missing school or a single class repeatedly absolutely affects a student’s success. Students will be assessed this month to give us more up to date and current information of how we can best meet learning needs, and the official state testing window is in May, only a few months away. I want to personally ask all our parents to take a heightened interest in your child’s progress and be prepared to help at home to foster that growth and academic recovery. I sincerely believe that working together reaps the greatest benefit of all, our children’s success. I believe it is the responsibility of both the school and home to work together to give every opportunity for student growth. Students also have a personal responsibility for their own learning and that is a focus for us for this second semester.
As all our students receive report cards, so does Lamkin Elementary as a school. The TAPR report and the Federal School Report Card have been posted on our campus from our progress last year. We are always available to answer any academic or accountability questions you might have and are happy to share the report with you at any time.
We continue to be vigilant in practicing all our safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid, especially Omicron. We greatly urge your child to arrive with a mask every day. Our kids have been wonderful about keeping them on, washing their hands, using hand sanitizer and social distancing…it’s become second nature to them. We are committed to keeping our campus healthy!
Throughout this Covid experience, we have so missed having our campus open to visitors. We promised we would try to open as soon as we could for lunch visitors and have devised a plan that we feel will meet all needs. Our plan is as follows:
- We are going to postpone the start date to Tuesday, January 25th and at that time will be open to immediate family members only to visit for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Since we are still social distancing to the best of our ability, we are going to limit the visitor number per grade level and lunch time to 8 parents/guardians (and 8 students).
- Reservations will be required and will be taken beginning the Monday of each week.
- We ask that you choose only one day so that everyone who wishes to participate has an opportunity.
- We will take a wait list, so ask if you are unable to keep your visit time, please let us know so we can offer it to the next family on the waitlist.
- To help in social distancing, our visitors and their child will be eating on the stage, a special treat in itself!
We are so hopeful that this will be temporary in nature and we can go back to our regular visiting times and structure as soon as possible.
As always, if you have any questions, please know that they are always welcome, and we will be happy to help in any way we can. Together we can do this, it is going to be a great year!
