NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
October 18, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Thank you so much for your feedback around how we can enhance Nederland Elementary School and retain more of our Nederland families. If you did not have a chance to complete the form, please do so today. Thank you! Link to the form.
This week I wanted to share with you how the district reorganization has been impacting us at Nederland Elementary. Last spring Dr. Anderson, our superintendent, announced how he planned to reconfigure the district into three networks (northwest, southwest, and east) to better align district resources to support schools. Nederland now falls under the northwest network which is made up of 18 schools which report to an assistant superintendent. Previously, all elementary schools (35 in all) reported to a single assistant superintendent. Also, each network has a cohort of directors and specialists assigned to that group of schools. In the past, departments such as literacy served all 55 of our schools.
The result of this reorganization has been more responsive district leadership and more streamlined school support. There has been a noticeable difference in how quickly my inquiries are responded to at the district level. Dr. Samantha Messier is our assistant superintendent and she continues to be very supportive of Nederland schools through our community meetings, regular visits, and data analysis discussions.
Another focus of Dr. Anderson’s this year has been implementing new systems to analyze school data and align school improvement goals. All district principals are participating in a new process to take an in-depth look at assessment data with district leadership, identify a “problem of practice” and strategically utilize district resources to support improve student growth. Currently, NES is in the middle of this process. We identified our “problem of practice” as: “How might we support student growth more effectively in a more targeted and individualized way throughout various steps of the MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) process (data cycles, kid talks, Student Support Team meetings), with an emphasis on matching targeted instructional strategies to students’ needs within the classroom environment?” Next week I will meet with our district support team to take an in-depth look at strategies and supports to further improve student growth. As always, please let me know what questions you have.
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Original Works Art Fundraiser
Dear NES Families,
The Original Works Fundraiser is on its way!
Original Works is the fundraiser that supports the visual arts department here at NES. Most of the items we use in the art room are consumables and we go through them quickly. So please take a look at your student's piece and perhaps there will be something you'd like to purchase. When purchasing something from Original Works, you are helping fund the elementary art program at NES. Thanks for all that you do, all of your support, and continued generosity.
As always, I'm so thrilled to be living and working in this community!
Warmly,
Susan B

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (Oct 14 -18, 2019)
Children need concrete examples of how to deal with their BIG emotions. They need to discover which healthy calming strategies will balance their nervous systems throughout their lives. Ask your child which tools and strategies help them connect their thoughtful Wizard Brain with their emotional Lizard Brain. Help them practice a variety of approaches --
1) Breathing Slowly, 2) Noticing How their Body Feels Inside, 3) Talking about their Feelings, 4) Moving Tension out of their Bodies, 5) Counting before Responding, 6) Soothing their Amygdala through their Senses, 7) Writing Down or Drawing their Feelings, 8) Showing Themselves Love and Care, etc.
Refocus Centers are placed in each classroom to allow students an avenue for calming their Lizard Brains in the midst of their school day. Students are practicing dozens of techniques for balancing their brains and regulating their emotions during BrainWise SEL lessons.
