Your Power, Your Decision - VOTE!
July 5th through July 12th, the Montclair branch participated in the NAACP 37th National ACT-SO Competition and 103rd National Convention. Our state ACT-SO gold medalist, Jacqueline Barnes, won a silver medal in architecture at the competition. Jackie is a recent graduate of Montclair High going to Carnegie Mellon University next fall.
At the convention, the NAACP announced a few initiatives, including: "The Black Church and HIV," a serious health initiative to engage the church in a health ministry around HIV and AIDS; "Game Changers," the 5 important civil rights issues that will guide the NAACP into the 21st century; and "This is My Vote," an initiative to register 1 million new voters, engage them in the process and protect voting rights.
I'm sure you heard, Mitt Romney spoke at the National Convention, and he spoke clearly about his plans if elected president. Also, we heard from Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder. Click the links to hear their speeches.

Financial Literacy Programs
Fall 2012The economic development committee applied for the next round of grant money for the financial literacy program. We've had amazing success so far with the program and are looking to expand it. We've partnered with the NJ Financial Planning Association's Pro Bono committee, who provides certified financial planners to do free workshops with us. Starting near the end of September or beginning of October, we will start an intense weekly program leading into Thanksgiving for families to learn about banking, savings, understanding, building and repairing credit, taxes, wealth management, investing and more. More information to come as we get closer to September.

Did you miss the Luncheon?
We have doubled our membership in the last two years, but we know we can do better. I believe we can increase our membership another 50% before the year is over. $2.50 a month is the cost of a membership. Not even a gallon of gas a month is as low cost as a membership in the NAACP. And the value in Montclair is only growing. Is your membership current? Your family members? Your neighbors? Your friends?
