Headteacher's News
This week we gained the Silver Level School Games Mark 2017/18, which rewards schools for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity. In the next couple of days we should receive our certificate which we can proudly display, and when we receive the School Games Mark logo we will be able to display this on letterheads, school website and social media. We are indebted to the work of the CSET Sports Partnership and our P.E staff who help facilitate events, such as the Dare to Dream event below. Our next challenge is achieving Gold Level!
Our Year 8 helpers at last week’s Dare to Dream, where primary and secondary students took part in activities inspired by using colour to get active.
Broken record syndrome again... our year-to-date attendance is not where it needs to be, particularly with our Year 11 students. I would urge all of our parents to ensure that our students are in school for five days per week. This school faces a particular challenge about ‘broken weeks’, i.e students taking a day off per week. It is a culture we are trying exceptionally hard to break but we need your support to do it.
Linked to that is the issue of First Aid. While we have, of course, a duty of care to all children, our trained First Aiders are being called out too often and it is affecting their work and learning in classrooms. We cannot, I’m sure you agree, provide a catch-all Nursing service.
I hope it is useful to make clear that First Aid is treatment for something which has happened in school.
If any student feels unwell, ONLY the Head of House can allow the student to go home.
These do not require treatment:
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Nausea
• Stomach ache
• Sore throat
• Cold
• Cough
There will be the odd occasion when a child is too ill to continue in school and we would then be in touch to arrange for the child to go home. That said, my staff are of the view that currently 80-90% of children coming to the medical room are not genuinely in need of treatment.
Please support us by reinforcing that school is a place for learning.

Theatre Visit
First time experiences…14 students went to see Legally Blonde at the Bristol Hippodrome. One student had never been to a theatre production and one student had played one of the characters in a summer drama company and was so happy to see a West End production of the musical.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
A very big ‘shout out’ to 6th formers Wil Hudson, Georgia Northcott, Lily Robbins, Tom Mould, Hannah Andrews, Laura Gowing and Ollie Small (ex-Mango Year11) who completed their Silver Award. It was a real test of resilience, skill and endurance; starting at 8am on Friday morning, camping for two nights in Exmoor National Park, walking 50km over three days and climbing over 1000m over a route they had planned. They started east of Dunkery Beacon and finished in Lynmouth/Lynton.
Departmental News
Science
Year 7s and Year 8s were treated to a problem solving workshop delivered by the Sea Cadets this week.
They were challenged to make a boat out of card. The winning vessel to hold the most marbles while floating!
Some of the designs were fascinatingly creative; showing some good ‘out of the box’ thinking.
We also found out we have some girls interested in becoming Marine Engineers! Exactly what we are hoping for – more girls in STEM careers !
Tassomai
Science is really pleased with how KS4 students have engaged with Tassomai!
All KS4 students should have their log in by now, but if you have any issues – please contact your Science teacher.
Some individual students that are going above and beyond (and deserve a big WELL DONE!) are: Amy Purrington of Year 11 who is absolutely racing ahead, with over 19% completed; Rowley Downs, the Year 10 leader with almost 10% covered; finally, Marshall Lane in Year 9 is also amazing as he’s also achieved 10%.
Message from Miss Orford - 'all 3 of you are awesome and a sweet treat will be making its way to you – as well as 10 House Points each!'
Don’t forget that 'Tea and Tassomai' for Years 9 - 11 is available every day!
School Musical
We have finished Act 1 and are looking forward to seeing a whole run through this week after school.
Rehearsals for all cast continue on a Friday after school and rehearsals for main characters continue at break times. Please can you remind your son/daughter to look at the Drama and Music notices on a daily basis in case he/she is needed.
A poster competition will be introduced this week for any budding artists with the closing date of Monday 9 October. More details will be announced in Student Briefing on Friday.
