Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 18th October 2019
Hands On History
Year 1 in York
Year 3 at the Ryedale Folk Museum
On Wednesday 16th October, Year 3 went to the Ryedale Folk Museum because we are learning about the Stone Age and the Iron Age. We attended three workshops: flint handling, weaving and living in a round house. We also did some exploring.
First we went to flint handling, we saw an enormous piece of flint and lots of tools like arrow heads and blades. We saw a stuffed, dead owl on the roof! We sorted the flint into groups: burnt flint, arrow heads, blades and scrapers.
Secondly we went to weaving. We got sticky pieces of grass and started weaving in and out and under the string and over the string. We also held sheep wool and got a tiny bit of it and started twisting it around.
After lunch we went to the round house where we sat around the fire and some people were chosen to do jobs. The first one I did was pretending to be a warrior and I had a fight against Ella. Then we moved to the fire and pretended to cook meat and porridge. Next we turned wheat into flour. After we passed around a sheep skull.
My favourite part was the round house because we did fun but tiring jobs.
Year 2 Forest Schools
Year 2 are having a fabulous time at forest schools. This week they made chocolate bread and cooked it on the fire they lit themselves. They collected their sticks and used the flint and steel to light the cotton wool which they threw on the fire. They also made Tudor houses by hammering wood together to make the frame and sticks to represent the thatched roofs.

This link is on our school website too. Please can we remind everyone that we work hard to keep our website up to date with as many useful resources, links and dates as possible. There are also year group pages and galleries of photos. If you haven't visited the website recently, how about clicking Ripon Cathedral School website?! With so many pages to edit, we are aware that we miss items which go out of date, and any constructive feedback would be welcome, thank you.

Message from the Friends
The Friends can't believe how quickly this first half term has gone. We hope everyone has had a great start to the school year so far. This week there have many discussions about a few fun events that are coming up after the half term break, the first being the disco on Friday 22nd November. Then later, the second event being the Christmas Fair on Thursday 5th December.
The Friends need some willing pupils to do some Christmas themed drawings to go on our poster for everyone to see. Sheets to take part in this will come out on Thursday 24th October to before returned by Friday 15th November. Anyone wanting a table for the fair there will be letters coming home with children next week.
The vegetable beds behind the KS2 classrooms are in need of a clear before winter sets in. If anyone would like to come along at 3.15pm on Tuesday for a dig, that would be great (even quarter of an hour's help would be good!). Parents must be responsible for their own children who will need to help not play please. You may even be able to take away some beetroot for your labours! Thank you.
We are still in need of someone to take the role of Secretary: this would mean taking formal minutes of our meetings when it's needed. If anyone would like to join the general committee, you would be more than welcome. Come and chat with Sherrie, Liz, Tina, Katy or Lily if you have any questions.
We will let you know when the next Friends meeting is very soon
