Trafalgar Elementary School- A Kagan Model School
September 1, 2018
A Note from the Principal
WOW! We've had an amazing start to the school year! Students worked hard the first 10 days reviewing and practicing our Trafalgar Expectations: 1. Be Respectful; 2. Be Responsible; 3. Be Safe; 4. Be a Learner. Thanks to all parents who attended our first SAC meeting on August 21. We discussed our school grade and the many reasons Trafalgar Elementary is more than a grade! Just to name a few: our highly effective teachers, staff dedicated to our students and families, and a positive school culture. Most importantly for me, students arrive every day with a smile and are happy to be at Trafalgar Elementary.
September is a busy month, so look carefully over the school calendar.
Smile and Be Kind,
Mrs. Murphy

Safety First
If your child is a walker, it is expected that they are able to walk to their house. Please do not park and wait for your child. The parent pick up line or bus is the safest way for children to go home at the end of the day.

PJammin' for Kids with Cancer
Trafalgar’s 2nd Annual PJammin for Kids with Cancer. On Friday, September 21st. We will host our 2nd PJammin event. Every student who donates $1.00 or more towards The American Childhood Cancer Organization, will not only receive a bracelet, but will also be able to wear their PJs to school. As an entire school, we will spend the day in our jammies to show support for all the children battling cancer. Money raised from this event will help The American Childhood Organization provide educational information for parents who have recently had their child diagnosed with cancer. They also provide the children with a stuffed cat, a play medical bag, comfy hospital blanket, an overnight bag, and many books to explain cancer to the child. Last year, we raised over $2,600!
Caught Reading- Fostering a Love of Reading
Does your child love to read? Or, is your child reluctant to read any more than necessary? To encourage reading for pleasure, we are asking you to snap a picture of your child while he or she is reading outside of school. It could be at home, at a park, or anywhere. “Catch” your child reading, take a picture, and email it to Mrs. Campbell at Nicolecc@leeschools.net. Please also include your child’s name, grade, and class. Your child’s picture will be featured on our “Caught Reading” display board at the entrance of our school. We appreciate your encouragement to foster a life-long love of reading!
School Nurse Health Note
Good health equals success in school. School nurses in the community touch the lives of children by addressing their health needs while in school. The goal of every school nurse is that kids enter class in optimal health and ready to learn every day. When children miss school due to illness and other issues, they are excluded from the learning process.
The School Health Services Act mandates that each school district provide health appraisals and management of actual or potential health problems which include vision, hearing, scoliosis (grade 6), and growth and development screenings. These screenings are done at Kindergarten, 1st grade and 3rd grade and when there is a concern that this may be affecting the learning process. With prompt referral and intervention, treatment and management are more effective and in the end, success happens in school. That is the hope for every child.
Just another reminder that children who have reached the age of ten (10) are eligible to receive the Tdap immunization (*this shot will be required for your child to enter the 7th Grade)
Counselor's Corner
Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. We have a comprehensive counseling program here that is designed to assist students with their social, emotional, or academic needs during the school day. To do this, the following services are provided: individual sessions, group counseling sessions, and core curriculum lessons. I am looking forward to helping all our students achieve academic success. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Crystal Engelhart crystalje@leeschools.net
PBS Gold Model School
Trafalgar Elementary is proud to be a Gold status PBS school again! Positive Behavior Support (PBS) allows individuals a new way to think about behavior. In Lee County, our schools use PBS in an attempt to understand why problem behaviors occur and what the function of these behaviors may be. PBS is designed to increase academic performance, increase safety, decrease problem behaviors, and establish positive school cultures through the use of evidence-based strategies and interventions (Florida’s PBS Project, USF). This approach is used at all levels; school-wide, specific educational settings, classrooms, and even with individual students.
