A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL SCRIVO
Parents, please remember that students entering the school building anytime after the bell rings at 9:12 AM must be walked in and signed in, by a parent. Students are not allowed to walk in alone. They must be accompanied by an adult and signed in when coming to school late, after an appointment, etc. This will help to ensure we keep our students safe!
NWEA 2019 WINTER READING AND MATH ASSESSMENTS
The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers are administering the WInter NWEA Reading and Math assessments on:

Please help your child prepare for this assessment in the same way you would for M - STEP. Make sure your child is getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast both days, and arriving to school on time. This data will be used to monitor your child’s progress and growth in comparison to the beginning of the year NWEA assessments. Please stress the importance of this assessment with your child and encourage your child to take his/her time on the Reading and Math assessment. Thank you for your continued support at home!
NWEA MAP provides a parent toolkit to support understanding of the MAP Growth assessment. Please feel free to access the parent toolkit that provides resources and videos at the following link: www.nwea.org/parent-toolkit/.
SCHOOL OF CHOICE APPLICATION WINDOW
The application window for Schools of Choice and the district’s STEAM program begins on January 14th and closes on February 12th. Please visit the district’s Schools of Choice and STEAM webpages or call (248) 865-6453 for more information.
Scotch Elementary School 2018 - 2019 School Improvement Goals:
- 60% of students will demonstrate growth in reading and math based on NWEA MAP by June 20, 2019.
- 90% of students will be proficient in informational writing.
- 100% of staff and students will implement and carry out Capturing Kids' Hearts with consistency and fidelity.

4th Grade Scotch Elementary students recently traveled to Lansing for a special field trip. Students had the opportunity to tour the Capitol, meet with local lawmakers and even had a special visit with Governor Whitmer.

HUNGRY HOWIE CLASS PIZZA WINNERS!
Congratulations goes out to Ms. Wright’s 5th grade class for winning the December Hungry Howie’s Pizza Day Contest. Ms. Wright’s class won last months pizza party which includes 6 warm and tasty pepperoni or cheese pizzas.

ATTENDANCE
Call the Scotch Safeline at 248-865-3282 by 9:30AM if you know that your child will be late or absent from school. If you have not called the safeline by 9:30AM, you will be automatically notified via phone/email that your student is absent from school. Your student's absence will be unexcused unless we receive a phone call within 24 hours.
FALL/WINTER CLOTHING REMINDER
Don’t Forget Your Coat! It seems winter has officially begun with these cold temperatures we are beginning to have. Please make sure that your child is adequately dressed for the changing weather (winter coats, rainy weather gear, hats, and mittens or gloves, etc.). Boots and snow pants are required for students to leave the black top if the grass is covered with snow. Please label all winter clothing. All students will go outside for recess and the bus line, unless the actual or wind chill temperature is 0 degrees or less. If your student needs to stay in for recess, we require a doctor’s note.

KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP PREVIEW NIGHT - Join us on Jan. 24
Do you have a little one starting kindergarten in the fall? Join us for Kindergarten Roundup on Jan. 24 at Doherty, Gretchko or Roosevelt Elementary schools for Preview Night and to learn everything you need to know in order to be ready for the first day of school.

UNITED WE WALK
The vision for the 25th Annual United We Walk event on Sunday, January 20, 2019 is to collect specific items to donate to the Grace Centers of Hope. There are multiple boxes throughout our school district that you can place your donations for the event. Below is a list of items we are looking to collect:
Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Deodorant, soap, and shampoo
Tissue and toilet paper
New Socks and underwear (Men, Women, & Children)
New Hats, gloves, and mittens (Men, Women, & Children)
Canned food items
OUR CHILDREN’S FUND
Our Children's Fund is a non-profit organization run by a dedicated group of volunteers with the support of the WBSD. Our Children’s Fund meets emergency needs and provides resources to help ensure that every student in West Bloomfield Schools is able to participate in academic and enrichment activities. The group is currently seeking donations to purchase cold weather clothing items for students and families in need this holiday season.
