Mrs. Foley's Counselor Corner
October, 2021
Dear Suamico Elementary Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for checking out my monthly newsletter! The school year is in full swing and we have been enjoying the extended warm weather during the month of October. One of the many fun activities we have been doing here at Suamico Elementary includes the "Kindness Initiative" where students have been "Caught Being Kind". When students are caught being kind they receive a sticker to wear, their picture taken, and the act of kindness printed and hung up on the wall outside of the lunchroom for all to see. Our students truly embrace kindness with each other and with the adults in the building. As author Al Carraway says, "We find whatever we're looking for. Look for the good!". This kindness initiative could certainly carry over into our homes/community, give it a try and notice how our perspective/paradigms start to shift.
As always, please feel free to reach out to share how your child(ren) are doing outside of school. I am available to meet during Parent/Teacher Conferences, just go to this link to sign up for a virtual conference with me: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4caaa62ba4f9c34-school2 or email to request I join the conference with your child's classroom teacher. I look forward to seeing and chatting with you about the most important people in your life - your child(ren).
May this warmth autumn season bring you endless joy!
(Please feel free to check back for updates as I'll be updating this newsletter for the whole month of October.)
Life Skills Class
I get to visit every class, K-4 to teach Life Skills class throughout the school year on an "A week", "B week" rotation. Thus, your child(ren) will have Life Skills class twice/month. This year I am very excited to have an evidence and research-based curriculum called "Second Step" that I will be using to guide our conversations. The 4 units cover the topics of Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problems Solving. See below for more grade level information on Scope/Sequence of this Social/Emotional curriculum.

Parent/Family Resources
When we teach mindfulness to kids, we equip them with tools to build self-esteem, manage stress, and skillfully approach challenges. Explore this guide on how to introduce mindfulness and meditation to your children—at any age. Mindfulness for Kids article/activities
Video Read Aloud's with Mrs. Foley
The Howard-Suamico School District has chosen to implement a Social/Emotional Curriculum in all grades K-8 called the Leader In Me. During the 2020-21 school year I recorded read alouds from the book, "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" for our students and families to learn about the 7 Habits while we were virtual. I'll keep these video read alouds here for future reference. Enjoy ;)
