Grants
Pennsylvania Humanities Council Grant- Awarded
PHC believes that including teen audiences in the public humanities is the first step in building a community of well-developed, highly-engaged adults. Teen Reading Lounge (TRL) is an interactive book discussion series created by PHC for public libraries to encourage teens, ages 12-18, to read and talk about literature that matters to them. Through book discussion of popular young adult literature and creative workshops and experiences, teens work side-by-side with fellow peers, library staff, and a program facilitator to enhance interpersonal, communication, critical-thinking, creativity and literacy skills. The goals of the program are to:
- Engage teen audiences in out-of-school time learning in the humanities that aids in youth development
- Increase the capacity of libraries to conduct public humanities programming for teens
This grant was written in collaboration from the Radnor Memorial Library's Teen Librarian and the events will take place at RML.

Overview:
We are asking for funds to purchase a set of ebooks (8-10 copies of each book over 8 (6-8 copies of each book for 4 months/book club sessions) on OverDrive (http://rtsd.lib.overdrive.com) so student participants can have access to the monthly book selection. With the average price of an ebook at $15, we believe that $1,000 will be enough to purchase books and build a community of readers every year at Radnor High School. This idea is similar to the Book-Club-In-A-Bag Program through the public libraries, where book clubs can check out multiple copies of the same book.
Who Is Involved:
The project will be open to high school students interested in reading outside of their assigned selections. The Radnor High School Book Club encourages students to read and discuss a variety of books in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Students are expected to read one book every month. Facilitators provide discussion questions to elicit dialogue and thoughts regarding the reading material. Membership is open to all students and faculty. We typically have 8-12 students and 4-5 faculty members on a regular basis.
Information on OverDrive:
A new ebook and audiobook service, OverDrive, has just been launched at the high school in April 2014. We would like to use this service, in addition to print books, to provide greater access to the book club selections this Winter and Spring. We typically purchase 2 print books and 1 ebook for students and faculty to use. There is a bigger demand, and we are hoping to add to our digital content so that the books can be used for our book club. These books are available 24/7, and can become a permanent part of our digital collection, making them also available for student-led book clubs or literature circles for class.
